More storage for my mac?

Question for Mac OS users: I'm running mac OS 10.4 and I just bought a new external hard drive after running out of room on my imac. (400 gigs for only $199.00 at Frys! Whoo hoo! )

It turns out that my users folder is sucking up about 26 gigs of space. Can I transfer this folder to my new external hard drive without screwing everything up? I'm primarily interested in moving all of my media over to my new hard drive, including itunes, hundreds of photos and my movies I'm currently working on in Imovie. I'm running into trouble actually FINDING these files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: More storage for my mac?

I'm not sure if moving your Users folder is possible but it probably wouldn't be a good idea anyway since it could cause problems down the road.

Here are some articles that address moving media libraries:

Here is one about freeing up space on your existing disk:

Hope this helps,

I wouldn't keep the user files or any application programs on the external. I would use the external for storage of all your files (pictures, movies). JMHO, tho'.

Doug,

Those links were EXACTLY what I needed! Thank you SO much!

And thanks princess. I tried to move my entire users folder and wasted a morning trying to move it back. By moving just the libraries, I just got about another 20 gigs to work with on my mac.
