Best way to register a domain?

Okay, I know about godaddy.com, my question is - is that the best/cheapest way to do it, or is there a better way? Can I go directly through ICANN? And/or does that invoke a lot of unnecessary trouble?

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

The best (and really the only practical way) would be through something like godaddy.com. I currently use http://domainsite.com/ (mainly because it was the cheapest way for me to take control of a domain someone else was transfering to me, and I stuck with it), but I'm sure theres better ones out there.

As for going through ICANN, you can't.. you need to find a registrar (such as GoDaddy)... ICANN has a list of registrars you can use (but I think your best bet would be a Google search.. its a long list with only a few ones you'd even consider)

i've dealt with a lot of registrars over the years and don't have many good things to say about most of them... i would definitly recommend using godaddy though... i have had no trouble with them and have transferred most all of my domains to be renewed through them...

I would recommend using a different company for registering your domain than the one you use for hosting your website. I have read a few stories by people who had trouble transferring their website to a different host when their site was originally hosted by their domain registrar.

Re: Best way to register a domain?

I currently host my domain (www.andycastro.com) through www.ActiveWebHosting.com.

It was free domain registration, and just $10 a month for unlimited webspace. If I registered for a whole year, I got it all for just $96, which comes out to $8 a month. Not bad.

I haven't had any problems with them yet, and so far, I'm very pleased with them.

I had an old site with www.CyberPixels.com about 3 years ago, and they wouldnt let me transfer my domain - I could get another host, but I would have to pay them the domain registration fee every year. I ditched the old site because I lost interest, but CyberPixels had absolutely terrible customer service, mostly just made up of like 4 staffers a couple of which used AIM to help customers, and one of them got fired and went on some crazy web campaign telling people of the horrors of CyberPixels and the company's owner and whatnot.

    Drama city.

Anyway, enough with that... I've heard GoDaddy.com is good, and I was so close to signing up with them, but I freaked out and canceled my order with them half-way through registering because their website is so poorly organized and I just got a really bad feeling that I would recieve poor customer service and stuff would be messed up, lost, etc - all based on the impression I had of their website.

Their organization on that site is absolutely terrifying. If you have the patience to ignore the million things theyre trying to sell you and the lack of organization with all of their different ads and sales pitches, then go for it, otherwise, go somewhere else.

Go for GoDaddy.com... we've had a lot of success with them.

my old provider wnet south and they suggested godaddy. i did it so the transfer would go smoothly...and it did, but I'm not to happy with godaddy's offerings...I signed up for two years though i just thought ti would be like my old provider, but no...it wasn't... so i will look around after the times up......and I called for customer service once with godaddy...just about the rudest person on earht answered...this was after several e-mail attempts for help and all they would do was respond in scripts.....the customer service girl, really wasn't much help either at first, but once she actually listened to me she answered somewhat. i still didn't believe her....oh well...I got it handled regardless.

That makes me happy that I avoided GoDaddy. I guess my first impression of their terrible site was right...

yeah...another frustration is they have all this stuff in the your accoutn area, but when you click on it it's an added charge. My old provider only had stuff there that I already paid for.....it's just not the best I have. I ahven't loaded my website on it yet...we'll see how that goes...LOL...so far I only have a blog up...thatw as free with my previous provider , but an added cost with godaddy......w/e...
