Shopping laptops

Okay folks, in a few short weeks I'm going to be in the market to buy a new laptop, and I need some input.

A little background: My current laptop is a Compaq and runs WinME. In other words, it's a piece of cr*p.

What I'm looking for is something that has a wireless connection (eg: so I can work from Starbucks or my living room, assuming we get a wireless router), and enough power to be able to run either Photoshop or RCT3 smoothly. In other words, not a piece of cr*p.

And since expense does not translate directly to quality, I want something that's well priced for what it is.

I started looking on newegg.com, but of course, they have so many that it's hard to narrow down. I will probably buy it from there (unless someone knows of a smokin' hot deal at Fry's or Best Buy), so if you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them (and links to the item on newegg are preferred, so I can see the reviews and such)

Re: Shopping laptops

Thanks for starting this Morrigoon...I told my daughter that maybe I'll get her a laptop for her birthday in November, since she still has at least 3 more years of school and so far as a 4.0, so... I think she's earned it.

If I had unlimited money I'd get her a MacBook. (Heck, if I had unlimited funds I'd get ME a MacBook) But for the most part I think the PC side you can get a better deal money wise, and for me that is a consideration.

I'm much more familiar with Mac, so any ideas or help for a decent, wireless capable PC are most welcome here too!!!

Re: Shopping laptops

If you get a MacBook, you can get a "free*" iPod Nano.

*with rebate

I just got mine in June and I'm really happy with it.

Yeah like I said... if I had unlimited funds... Morrigoon might not have a price ceiling but I need something under $1000...WAY under would be good.

So what brands are good? Dell? Sony? Acer? Toshiba? What processors are best? I've heard the Celeron's are not so hot, but like I said, I'm a Mac person.

Goonie and I need details!!!!

Re: Shopping laptops

PS, aren't you a teacher? Mac does offer an educator's discount, so it might be worth looking into. (It was still over $1000 though )

Re: Shopping laptops

Looks like I'll probably be shopping in the $1200 range. I could theoretically go up to $1800, but I suspect I can get what I need for less.

The educator discount isen't what it use to be. Its less than $100 difference now. And I would have to kick the RAM up to AT LEAST 1GB, and that adds almost $100.

Although there is a one week old MacBook on eBay right now in San Bernardio for BIN of $950... um... tempting...
