    Need Advice

I hope some of the tech experts here can help…

Saturday, I found that I can no longer access one of my favorite websites. I got the same result with both Firefox and IE. I know one of the administrators for the site, so I asked her if the site was down. She said that it was up and running fine.

I cleared my browser cache and flushed the DNS cache.
I looked up the IP of the site and tried that.
I tried accessing the site from the other 2 computers on my home network.
I bypassed the router and tried connecting directly through the DSL modem.
I tried connecting via dial-up (on my laptop, not the main desktop).

None of these things worked. I still could not access the site (or any other pages at the host site), but I could access other webpages.

I called my ISP (Earthlink). They said that the problem was not on their end. The Tech I spoke with was able to pull up the page through Earthlink’s servers just fine.

I’m completely at a loss. Any ideas?

What kind of response do you get when you try to go to that site? Do you get a specific error message, does the connection time out, etc.? Can you even ping the server?

It looks like you have tried just about everything you should. Maybe you could post the website name and IP address. I know you had your ISP try it but I prefer not to go by their word.

If you continue to have problems consider uninstalling Earthlink then reinstalling it. That may help but I would only do it as a last resort though.

    Re: Need Advice

Can you run a traceroute on the IP to see how far your request is getting?

You can run the tracert command from a command prompt (e.g. tracert 255.255.255.255) or us a network utility like the one on this site: http://www.dnsstuff.com/

That will at least give you a clue as to where the problem lies. Other than that, I would go back to your friend who is an admin for the site and see if they can assist on their end.

Please continue to post updates - I'm very curious to see what the problem is.

Can you access other websites ok? Post the URL so we can try to access it.

It's possible that maybe there is a router down somewhere between you and the site - if so, then there is nothing you can do about it. You'll just have to wait until someone fixes it.
