Question Intel vs AMD for serious gaming!

So, i'm very nerdily into gaming and have decided to buy a new desktop (two actually, his and hers, rofl!) to play such graphics intensive games as Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights2, and other games such as Battlefield 2, Star Wars Battlefront 2, and Battlefield 2142. I've finally narrowed my decision down to 2 systems and am wondering if someone with a LOT more knoweldge than i could give me some advice as to which system to pick. On my NWN servers' forums more the one person has said its all in the graphics card and memory you have. I'd like know to what you techie gurus say

I hate sifting through details, so I bought myself an Alienware. I highly recommend them, since they are built for gaming. Plus, I've had good experience with customer support ... and five years after my laptop can still kick butt!

i'm avoiding Alienware due to the fact that pricing the exact same systems on their website they come up 400-600 dollars higher. but dang do they have some nice cases

They both look pretty good. I wouldn't do RAID 0 in less you don't mind losing everything on the system. With RAID 0, you are doubling your risk of failure. Basically if either drive fails, you lose everything.

AMD has traditionally provided better performance for the $$$$. I would be comfortable with either.

Re: Intel vs AMD for serious gaming!

here's an update! the systems above arrived....and wouldn't work! i was a bit out of sorts becuase of it, called tech support and the TS guy wanted me to pull the cards off the motherboard and then put them back on..i told him this was WAY beyond what i felt comfortable with and he said "C'mon, its not like its difficult". he was very rude and i told him i'd call customer service instead.

as soon as the CS lady started talking, i started crying. I had just spent 5k on new computers and they didnt' work and so on and so on. Major props to TigerDirect.com's customer service, the lady was very kind and sent me labels to send back the systems and gave me a full refund.

once those systems got back to them and our money was credited we went to a local computer store and talked with someone about building us a couple of custom systems. The people there were beyond helpful and we brought home our new babys today! They have:

    Core 2 Duo E6400
    GeForce 8800 GTX
    2 GB RAM
    Kandalf ThermalTake liquid cooling boxes

    well, that's the basics anyway

here's a few pic of the systems and our new keyboards (Logitech G15s):

this is a shot of the "radiator" in the front of the box. during the summer months our computer room runs about 15degrees hotter than anywhere else in the house, even with the AC on, which is why we went with liquid cooling. even with all the fans the noise level is about the same as our last two desktops:

please to be pardoning my hubby's hairy leg!

I too like Alienware and their customer support but the system your local guy made up looks great. Very neatly done. Let the games begin!!
