On my camera set to the 5 megapixel mode I can get over 1500 shots on my 2GB card. You should be able to get around that many.

Well if one train leaves from New York at 9:00 PM Eastern traveling at 75 Miles an hour and heading west and another train leaves from San Fransisco at the same time traveling 67 Miles an hour and heading East, and which point will these two trains meet?

    Show your work.

Actually, doesn't your camera tell you how many pictures you have left?
    What an idiot....

Yeah, I do that Twitter thing.

Tui's right. Your camera should tell you how many you have left.

Also, it all depends on not only the quality of the settings you use, but also the camera. And whether you're shooting in JPEG or RAW. And not every compression method is equal. It all depends on your camera.

Me? I get between 150-200 photos on a 2 gig card with a 10.1 MP camera shooting raw.

That's around how much I got on the same card on my 6 MP camera, too.

Just looked at my Canon SD600, a 6 MP camera. I have a 1GB card installed, freshly formatted and set for shooting at the highest quality JPEG. The camera reports that I can shoot 361 photos. Well, that may be a little high, but not too far off, so you should be able to get at least double that on a 5 MP camera with a 2GB card.

I also checked some photos in Photoshop 7 shot with these setitng and Photoshop reports the images as being 2816 x 2112 and the file size for the images is between 2 - 3 MB.

Which is also another point -- image sizes fluctuate depending on what's in the image, therefore you'll often see the remaining shots fluctuate as well.

It's not like film, where 24 exposures means 24 exposures (which can also fluctuate, depending on the camera ).

Which brings up another thing. Most folks shoting film (way back when) always had a spare roll (well some folks did), so when shooting to memoy cards I always try to carry a spare "just in case" and I also download images to my computer as soon as I get to it (I carry a laptop on trips and vacations, and burn CDs as backup, right then while on the trip), and then reformat the card so I have fresh cards for the next time out.

Way back when? I always carry several spare rolls of film with me! Way back when is just today and tomorrow for me.

I bet you also carry spare memory cards for your digital cameras also.

Film has it's advantages for a serious photographer, you can do some things with film that you just cannot (so I am told) do with digital, but...

    No more film for me!

    Just MHO, YMMV

For my digis: 2gb, two 1 gb, a couple of 512mb.

    For film: several 120, several 135 (that's 35mm), and a couple of 110.

Re: 2.0GB memory card w/ 5.1 megapixel camera

I have a Kodak 6MP camera and when I combine the internal memory (which I have no idea how big it is) with a 1GB memory card, I get around 525 photos, which is more than enough. I took over 100 pics of my friend's band when they played last weekend. They kept asking me, "How many pictures does that thing hold?"
