    Internet Help

    So I recently updated both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Now, neither of them are loading any websites. It said something about a firewall, but when I shut down my firewall it still didn't help.

    Does anyone have any knowledge about this kind of situation?
    What an idiot....

    I don't. But I do know that you need to get that crap working again cause we miss you!

    A similar thing happened to me recently, but different. Only certain websites wouldn't load like CNN and Gmail. But MiceChat would load. It lasted like 3 weeks and we think we finally figured out it was a bad wireless signal. We changed it and it worked fine and we haven't had any problems since.

    But that doesn't really help does it?

    What happens if you put in an IP address like 69.16.243.148 rahter than a URL like cnn.com?

    Can you ping 69.16.243.148 ?
    ( start->run->command then enter ping 69.16.243.148 )

    What does ipconfig/all show you? (run that from the command prompt like ping)

    If all else fails, and you have Windows XP try "System Restore". It's in Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.

    I've tried that, but when I go through all the steps of restoring it (choosing a restoring point, having the computer shut down yadda yadda yadda) it always says that the restore could not be completed!

    Yep, system restore is pretty useless.

    Start with the basics.. ensure you have connectivity.

    Goto the start button and goto 'run' and type in 'cmd' and hit ok. This will open a dos prompt window.
    At the dos prompt, type 'ipconfig /all' and hit enter

    In the text that comes back, there is a entry named 'default gateway', it will be an IP address. If its anything that starts with 169.x.x.x stop here.

    Try to ping that IP address. At the dos prompt type 'ping x.x.x.x' where x.x.x.x is the IP from the default gateway. If that comes back 'no response' stop there. If you get replies back, continue

    From the ipconfig output, you should have DNS Servers listed. Note the IP of the first one.
    Try to ping a common address. Enter 'ping www.yahoo.com' at the dos prompt. You should get something that looks like this

    C:\Documents and Settings\flynnibus>ping www.yahoo.com

    Pinging www.yahoo-ht2.akadns.net [209.191.93.52] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 209.191.93.52: bytes=32 time=52ms TTL=47
    Reply from 209.191.93.52: bytes=32 time=51ms TTL=46
    Reply from 209.191.93.52: bytes=32 time=66ms TTL=46
    Reply from 209.191.93.52: bytes=32 time=54ms TTL=47

    Ping statistics for 209.191.93.52:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 51ms, Maximum = 66ms, Average = 55ms

    If you get replies, continue. If you get 'could not find host', stop.

    Based on this, we can find out if you have basic connectivity, and your problem is in the applications and their settings.. or if its basic IP network setup.
