AT&T has acquired Cingular & BellSouth

Weird considering Cingular bought out AT&T's wireless side just a few years ago.

Yep. So if you're a Cingular customer, looks like the name's going to be changing to AT&T within the next few months. They say there will be no change in service.

They cannot change your contract as a result of this acquisition...

Re: AT&T has acquired Cingular & BellSouth

    Basically the AT&T circus continues..

Cingular was formed by SBC and Bell South. Both baby bells who got their start in wireless when AT&T broke up and gave its wireless franchises to the baby bells.

AT&T later got into wireless again.. as AT&T wireless.. and eventually sold out to Cingular. Cingular rolled all AT&T customers into Cingular.

    SBC buys AT&T.

SBC changes its name to at&t

SBC (now at&t) buys out Bell South.. so now SBC (now at&t) owns all of Cingular

at&t decides to trash the Cingular brand (big mistake!!!) to rename the service back to at&t

Besides the circular adventure AT&T has had since initially developing Cell Phones.. this trashing of the Cingular brand is a huge mistake.

Why is this a huge mistake? AT&T is more internationally known by name and even Stan Sigman (Cingular CEO) likes the idea. And Cingular was going to change their name before the Bell South aquisition. Bell South liked the idea too.

One last thing, AT&T Wireless was seperate from AT&T (they leased the name) and cost 5 times more than it's former parent company for the acquisition.

It will be just a name change, no plan changes, number changes, nothing.

What does Internationally known get you when you are trying to sell contracts in Iowa? The Cingular brand is well established and is known to the the #1/#2 carrier in the country.

What do people remember about AT&T Wireless? That it failed and most people were dissatisfied with it.

What does AT&T bring with it? Confusion.. you need a score card to keep track of what they are or are not doing.

AT&T Wireless started as part of AT&T as AT&T bought up McCaw.. it was then spun into a separately traded entity (a popular tactic at the time) and later spun into an independent company. It was AT&T for almost 7 years.. only 3 years as an independent before it was sold to Cingular

Keep dreaming.. a year from now things will be different. Of COURSE the tune being sung right now is 'don't worry.. everything will be the same.. stay the course'. They don't want to rock the boat and create a flight situation. But executives are not paid to maintain status quo.. there will be egos and projects pushed through.

Yeah, but even if they grandfather you.. any changes to service are a way to negate the old plan and move you to a new one.

Being Grandfathered basically means 'freeze!' because any more you do will bump you out of it.

So, does your opinion make it so? This is pure opinion.

But if you don't make changes, you can keep it. Why do you need to make changes? And what you say is true with all wireless companies, with or without mergers and acquisitions.

Did you ever consider that at&t was going international? This is why they are doing the name change.*gasp*

Well when Cingular and AT&T Wireless merged, people were saying the same thing. The company will lose 20 million customers! Well 2 years later, the company (Cingular alone) has about 58 million customers the most of any carrier. Instead of going backwards, it's going forward.

And actually, a lot of people WERE satisfied with AT&T Wireless, their plans were so much better and before the merge had the best network in L.A.
