CD-RW drive help

I've had a CD-RW drive in my computer for 3 or 4 years now and I've never had a problem.... until now.

I went to upload a CD into my mp3 player and got an error message that says "This CD-ROM does not support digital ripping." It's an old CD... actually a CD-R that someone made me years ago, so it wouldn't be encrypted because I've ripped from this CD many times before. I tried my other mp3 ripping software and it wouldn't work either.

What could've happened? Is there any way to fix this?

BTW, my CD-RW drive is a Sony40x/12x/48x. And I run Windows 98 on my PC.

Do you use your drive a lot? My roommate began having weird problems and it was because she completely burnt out her drive. Is it only this one CD? Have you been able to rip other ones lately? More questions than answers really.

3-4 years of constant use can cause it to burn itself out... thankfully they aren't that bad anymore...

I tried my 45x regular CD-ROM and it wouldn't do it on that either.

I don't use my CD-RW every day but I have used it alot. It's strange because it was fine just last week. Then I wanted to upload one of my Depeche Mode CDs and the latest Beck CD a friend made me a copy of.

I emailed Sony's tech support. We'll see what they have to say. Hope the drive isn't shot.

I need a new computer but I just can't afford it right now. Every time I get the money saved up something more important comes along and I have to spend it on that. Makes me mad. I'm asking for a Dell gift card for my birthday (which is in August).

Just an update...

I got an email back from SOny's tech support and they sent me some troubleshooting tips. Followed their instructions and I got the drive working properly again. Yay! Uploaded a few CDs into my mp3 player tonight.
