    Converting m4a to MP3?

What's the best (free) program to convert M4a files into MP3s?
    Thanks!

I'm in the same boat. My music match jukebox suddenly went belly-up after I bought a song from Itunes and wanted to convert it, so I need the same advice as NNL.

    Any help would be fantastic!!!

    http://www.versiontracker.com/windows/

I use the Mac version of this site A LOT to find programs. You can often download trial versions of programs, or shareware and freeware. Many programs have a "star" rating to let you know what other think of how well they work, and you can sort your search by catagory such as audio/video, business/productivity etc.

I have a free program I downloaded a couple years ago.

    http://www.poikosoft.com/

I just noticed the current version (11) is a 30 day trial. The one I have (version 4.8) was totally free.

To convert an .MP4/M4A file to .WAV or .AIFF in iTunes:

    1. Open iTunes Preferences (under Edit on Windows or under iTunes on OS X)
    2. Click on the Advanced tab
    3. Click the small Importing tab inside the Advanced tab
    4. In the "Import Using" dropdown, choose "WAV Encoder" or "AIFF Encoder"
    5. Click OK
    6. Right-click the file in iTunes > "Convert Selection to WAV"
    7. You can then import the converted WAV file into Audacity, or any other converter and export to MP3.

I put the track on a re-writeable cd and then used my dad's program, CD burner xp Pro 3 to get the mp3 out of it. It's a lot of steps, but it works.

Try a program called Audacity - it's open-source and completely free. Works with a bunch of formats!

Audacity also uses the Lame encoder which produces a higher quality audio product than iTunes - which is notorious for lower quality translations.

Just highlight the song, right click and select "Convert to MP3." The audio quality may not be as high as some other encoders, but honestly for me it's plenty good enough and I'm a musician who has trained ears. Besides, unless it's piped through high quality speakers or earphones it's like putting HD through an old TV; the quality is overkill.

Does the newest version of iTunes behave differently with these files? I just bought my first few songs on iTunes, and it won't let me convert the m4p files to other formats; you get an error message saying that they are copy protected and conversion is not allowed. I'm not trying to do anything that they should object to; but they sure make it a pain.

The only way to convert those copy protected songs is to burn them to CD.. and then reimport them.
