Apple screws the early adopters again. Buy the touch early and you get to pay $20 for the software they give anybody who buys it today for free...

    Way to go Apple!

The zune may not have been the hit that MS hoped for, but at least they upgraded firmware on the original 30GB to the same features as the completely new model for free.

In better news, the iphone upgrades have all been free.

I installed the software update today. I have a nice icon for MC on my screen now. It is fun to move around the icons. I am really looking forward to being able to purchase software and games next month.

Re: MacWorld 2008 - Keynote Live Coverage

I still have money left over from the $100 rebate for early iphone adopters, but I can't seem to find a rental section on itunes.

There's a place that says New Rentals, but it's not that many. I thought that all the movies that currently sell would have a rental version.

$20 big whoop-de-doo. I paid the $20 and was glad to! The new applicaitons and funcitionality is worth it.

Should the apps have been there from the beginning -- yes.
    Were they? -- no.
Should Apple charge early adopters -- no,

But guess what? It's $20, big deal, I've had more than the $20 worth of fun while having my "Touch". Now I get to have a brand new device for only $20.

As for a Zune -- Not even gonna go there. Enjoy your Zune! I know I'll enjoy my Touch!

Re: MacWorld 2008 - Keynote Live Coverage

SoulQ, my brother had the same question about the rentals yesterday. I did some searching on the Apple site to figure out where it should be. There was a page under iTunes that had a screncap of the Ratatouille page from the iTunes Store. Where there is normally one gray button that says "Buy Now" there were two buttons.

I think they will be putting out a new update for iTunes once they get it set up properly.

Who ever said I owned a Zune? I have a 30GB and next to my PS3 is the piece of tech I most regret ever spending the money on. Not because the iPod isnít a good device, but because iTunes sucks so badly.

MS brought out a completely new MP3 player and gave the upgraded firmware to their existing customers for free. Apple updates the firmware on an existing device and charges $20 for it. Who would you say is supporting their customers better?

My point is Apple knows they can screw over the early adopters and get away with it. You paying $20 for something that they give away for free is proof. Granted, after enough people start complaining and they see that people arenít going to stand for it, theyíll give you a $10 credit for the Apple store. Yay? SoulQ still has credit left over from his rebate and this happened how long ago? Apple should have given full refunds when they realized they werenít going to get away with it.

Enjoy your iPod Touch, itís a great device. Keep that credit card handy for the next time they update the firmware for their current product and decide to charge for it.

    Just MHO, YMMV

Apple must have updated the iTunes Store overnight. Rentals are now available.

They were available Tues. but there still isn't a designated place to see all the available rentals. Engadget said there are around 150, but it'd be nice if there was a section in the store instead of browsing through each video to see if a rental is available.

FYI, Apple just announced that you're going to get to pay for another firmware upgrade.

    http://gizmodo.com/364788/iphone-20-...o-pay-up-again

Apple plans to release the final iPhone 2.0 software, including the iPhone SDK and new enterprise features, as a free software update for all iPhone customers by the end of June. Third party applications created for the iPhone will also run on the iPod touch, and iPod touch users will be required to purchase a software update to run these applications.

They aren't charging for the update. They will be charging for the 3rd party software. When I had a Palm, I had to purchase 3rd party software for it. Not a huge deal this time around.

If it's the same $20 they charged for the last one, Touch owners should have bought an iPhone for the extra $60.
