Help with creating "home videos"

My dad received "Roxio Easy Media Creator 10" for Christmas. My parents have spent countless hours ever since trying to figure out how to use it. They even bought the "For Dummies" book and downloaded from the internet tech manual - all to no avail.

My dad just wants to do simple things like:

- edit digital videos from his camcorder
- add titles
- make chapters
- add soundtracks
- delete and/or move scenes

Can anyone recommend a more user-friendly software program to achieve this? They have given up on Roxio and are really frustrated.

Thanks!

Re: Help with creating "home videos"

I really liked the Pinnacle Studio programs - but my computer isn't beefy enough to handle all that I wanted to do with it, so it kept shutting down.

Re: Help with creating "home videos"

I use Sony's Vegas Movie Studio. While it's chock full of features and more of a full blown consumer video editing package, I've found it easy to use.

I'm assuming that you've tried any built in programs (ie. Windows Movie Maker or Apple's iMovie) to do what you want to do.

Other than that, you can search for freeware video editing programs on the internet or others here, I'm sure, will chime in on their faves.

Adobe Premier Elements is also a good software.

But keep in mind that editing video is not a simple things. It takes time to learn and practice.

Re: Help with creating "home videos"

If your computer shuts down with Pinnacle because it is underpowered - then all the above suggestions will be of little use. Pinnacle's footprint and overhead is pretty darned low, and I don't see how any of the other mentioned programs will perform any better as they all have similar performance requirements.

The best bet is to upgrade your computer to one that can stand up to the rigors of video editing.

Re: Help with creating "home videos"

When I first started with video, I used Windows Movie Maker. Yes...a horrible...horrible piece of junk, but it gets the job done. I haven't used it in years though, I <3 my Final Cut Studio

Re: Help with creating "home videos"

I tried the Roxio software last year and I didn't like it AT ALL. I just wanted it for the DVD burning software, but thought I'd try the editing.

Both the DVD Burning and editing programs were terrible. I've been using Adobe Premiere since I started edting and I find it very user friendly.

I still haven't found a DVD Burning software (to make DVD menu's, etc) that I like.

My school video lab has a really easy (and good!) DVD burning program for Windows...i'll try to get the name of it today.
Of course though if you have access to a Mac, iDVD would be easiest.

Re: Help with creating "home videos"

I've used the PowerDirector/PowerProducer series from CyberLink on my PC with some success. Like others have said though, it does take time.
