Tivo - Why is it awesome?

Hi.

*Please move this thread, if you don't feel it should be "The Tech Lounge". * I wasn't sure where to put this question.

I just wanted to ask, if you have a Tivo. Why is it awesome? or Why is it not great?

I nevered got one and I would like to listen to ones that have a Tivo and what they have to say about it.

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

i don't have tvio, but I have a dvr with ou satellite. i think it works kind of the same. I never thought I would use it, but it turns out I love it.

I don't know if tivo is different, but it's easy to record, it's easy to set up programmed recording and you can search for your interest and set up recording that way also. I have a lot of movies just saved on the dvr...it's kind of like on demand, but with movies I like.

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

its awsome! ever have a movie or show you want to see but forgot to set the vifeo recorder? ever wanted to tape a whiole season of something so every time its on it records ( I record survivor, big love, asnd so many other shows! )
Ever want to see a movie thats playing in the middle of the night but its to late to do it , record it! ever want to rewind something you saw ? now you can, ever want to fast forward thru comercials when you taped a show and the comercials are driving you nuts?? well now you can! I can not live with out mine, and I find my self trying to rewind at my moms all the time and she does not have it save your favorite movies or shows, for as long as you want. there is a huge hard drive on them so you can save a lot of shows!

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

We have two TiVos in the house. Besided the fact that it can record and playback TV shows and movies like a VCR, TiVo has a way to "learn" your likes and dislikes when you watch TV. (Green thumbs up and Red thumbs down). As you rate the TV shows you watch, TiVo will automatically record shows it thinks you would like according to that criteria. So, when you turn the TV on and there's always something you like.

TiVo also has a way to automatically search and record shows depending on your keywords. For example, you can set up "DISNEY" as a keyword and it can record shows that are Disney related, or have Disney in their description.

There are, of course, a lot more features.

We really love ours.

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

My hubby convinced me we needed a DVR about 2 years ago. Now I can hardly watch regular TV. I have finally figured out how to record programs (never could with a VCR), its easy to play back and pause TV shows so you can go potty or make popcorn. If you have a show you always want to record its easy to tell it to record all of the episodes or even just the first time the episodes are on. We can record two shows and watch a different show that has been pre-recorded. This is one 'toy' that will make you happy.

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

I recorded the whole season of lost and when an actor says something and you can't quite hear what he/she said you can just rewind immediately...when the commercial comes on just fast forward through and you're in real time again.

it also has a feature to record only new shows...so no reruns get recorded.

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

It will change your life.

Geez, that sounds so sad, but it's true. By skipping commercials, you can watch an hour of tv in 40 minutes. You can watch when you want to watch and you can be watching one show while recording another- if you delay it just right you can watch all of your shows, even the ones that conflict, and still come out ahead for time.

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

We have 2 tivos and a dvr. When they first came out I was SO against it, but sadly, I must admit, I absolutely love them! On one of our televisions, we can only tape 1 show and if we are watching live tv, we must be on that channel. The other 2 tvs can record 2 shows at a time, so you can watch live tv and still record other shows. I know we sound like total couch potatoes, but really we aren't. Really.

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

That's just it, though. It actually frees you from being a couch potato! You get to watch more efficiently, which is great.

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

We have a DVR - I love it because I can record TV shows, play with my kids in the evening, and then after I put them to bed, I have something to watch!

Also, I hate daytime TV, so, I can watch the shows I like while I fold laundry!

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

We have two TiVos. When we got an HD tv for the bedroom, we decided to scrap one of them and get the cable company's HD DVR. But TiVo wasn't about to give up on us. They offered to waive their monthly fee for three months while we got to know the DVR. But that's not all--they offered to sell me a new HD TiVo at a $100 discount AND I could transfer the account from the old TiVo locking in the lower monthly rate. They gave me three months to decide.

Three months passed. The cable DVR was frustrating to operate--at times there were huge delays responding to the remote. And the user interface was just plain sucky compared to what we were used to. So I took the HD TiVo deal. It's far superior to the cable DVR, and over time we'll save the money we invested in it up front. The only capability it lacks is watching OnDemand programs--something we never did anyway.

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

All of the above posted and most of all being able to never miss an episode of your favorite show is the greatest deal.

My wife was a bit apprehensive when I told her. But now she is the Tivo master.

I totally agree with all of the above and I only wish they had something like that for the radio!

Re: Tivo - Why is it awesome?

I have 2 DVR's which makes life more simpler. Intead of watching live TV and waiting for the commericals I can now just fast foward the commericals which saves me time. Also I can watch a TV show whatever time I want to.
Hey, has anyone seen the episode of The Simpsons when the Simpson family buy a TiVo. Marge fells so bad to skip the commericals she stays up to watch them all. Marge can be weird sometimes.
I wonder who still uses a VCR.
