    Anti-Virus: What do you use?

What anti-virus/virus scanner do you use?

Does it work? Is it expensive? Would you recommend it?

I get my internet from Charter and with that comes a free anti-virus program. Overall, I'm satisfied. It works well for something I don't have to pay for.

Re: Anti-Virus: What do you use?

I have used the following Anti-virus at many locations.

Norton AntiVirus - A lot of people bad mouth Norton but it’s a solid software and the company will be around for a long time. The biggest complaint is its speed and memory, both of which they have improved it over the past few version; they still have a long way to go.
On a side note, this is what I use at home and by watching for sales and rebates, I have been able to get the new version free each year.

McAfee VirusScan – I use to think that this was the best anti-virus software out there but they have gone downhill ever since Computer Associates (CA) took them over. I have found the interface clunky and in an office environment it not easy on the IT staff.

Trend Micro – consumer reports gave this very high marks, but I have had major problems with this software. I have had it miss viruses and its support which I have used more than once was not all that great.

Kaspersky – I’m using this for the first time at my work. It’s pop up’s are a bit of a nag at times. For example if your computer is off over the weekend, on Monday when you boot up it will give warnings that “You are not Up-to-date”, which always generates a phone call from a user or two. I have already run into one “ad-ware” attack that it was not able to clean up. So I’m not so impressed so far.

Bottom line, there is NO perfect software out there that catch everything.

The real key for computer safety is to be careful, keep all software up-to-date and to use not just anti-virus but also anti-spy/ad ware as well…..

Finally use the software you have; SCAN your computer once a week!

    I hope that helps.

    McAfee VirusScan.

I purchase at Fry's when on sale and turn in the rebates. Net cost - nothing, or as near to nothing as possible.

I have found the previous versions easier to use (as in I can find what I'm looking for, and just do it) than the newest version that makes it more difficult to find specific features. It's like they are becoming more similar to a MAC philosophy - (don't worry about it, we'll take care of it for you, you don't need to think, and you don't want to) - but I don't work that way. I like to know where everything is and twiddle with it.

Haven't had a problem in all the years I've been with McAfee.

Kaspersky is also what I'm using, I switched from Panda since this AT was rated as the best and so far no viruses, it scans for incoming threats, but I agree its more geared towards the advance users, not the newbs

AVG best I have had. works well. I even paid for the latest version. I love it. It does not bog my computer down, Norton was good for that.

I don't like paying for antivirus when I don't need to...

I'll mostly use Avast with a double check with Trend Micro's Housecall. I do rather enjoy Avast's option of scanning at computer boot (rather than Windows boot).

When scanning, I've found that not even the best program seems to be able to detect all of the problems.

I'll also use SpyBot for stuff that the Anti-Virus doesn't get. And the new version currently under Beta is great -- nice and much, much faster.

I use AVG, works great and finds things Norton and McAfee didn't. It doesn't bog down my computer as well and provides more than enough protection. Oh and hey It was free!!! AVG.com

I love Windows Live OneCare , if you watch the sale ads, you can generally get it for about $20 (good on up to three machines). It has automatic printer sharing, and is one of the best solutions if you've got more than one machine around the house.

I use CA Security Center. I got it free from the cable company, the license will never expire and it does what it's supposed to. I run it on both the desktop and the laptop.

I used to use Norton on my desktop. It worked good, but it bogged down the system too much. CA isn't as much of a memory hog as Norton is.
