    iPhone Upgrade Hell

It was not a fun morning. After waking up at 5 am to update the software on my phone to version 2.0, my phone locked up and wouldn't work. It displayed a strange error and would not complete the upgrade process.

I had already decided to go to the store to buy a new phone but wanted to play with the new 2.0 software while waiting in line.

By the time I got to the store at 6:45, there were over 400 people waiting. I waited until about 8:30 and the line had only moved by about 20 people. So I got out of line and went to work.

We had people following the struggles at various stores this morning. I wrote a post on my work blog about it that some of you may enjoy:
    http://telecommonthly.com/2008/07/ap...-heavy-demand/

I'm headed back to the store at noon to see if there is any chance of getting in and getting the new phone.

You can fix the problem with a locked up 1.0 phone by disconnecting and reconnecting the phone to your computer. It will eventually connect, but you may have to try dozens of times before it does.

    What was your experience?

    -Dusty

Wow, sorry to hear about that, Dusty. I learned that I'm not eligible for a discount upgrade until September 8th, so that's when I'll be getting the new iphone.

We had a friend go at 5 a.m. to get his phone - which he got. But he said that people had camped out in front of the store all night.

    Re: iPhone Upgrade Hell

I started trying to download version 2.0 this morning around 7am. Nothing. But I still had to download the new itunes software and I figured it wouldn't hurt to download 10.5.4 as well.

It is now almost 6 hours later (I'm switching to cable next week as my DSL is glacial) and I still can't get back to the link.

Anyone have a direct link to 2.0? It will no longer come up with my phone sync as it thinks it has the current version. I looked at the apple site and I can't find a link. I found THIS...

    http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/

...but I'm still not seeing the link.

    Is it just me?

Sorry about your long lines, Dusty. The news reports this morning said that the ATT processing computers went down under the demand this morning. Today could be a looooooong wait. Trust AT&T to screw this up for apple. I will probably wait to upgrade until I can find how much more per month this will cost me, AND to find out if the 3g is even usable in my area.

If you're having problems with activation, just leave it plugged in for awhile.

    http://gizmodo.com/5024334/how-to-fi...ctivation-woes

Have you tried to activate your iPhone to no avail? Are you holding a $299 brick in your hand? Here's what you do. When activating your iPhone (or just upgrading to 2.0 software), if you get an error message on your phone, DO NOT UNPLUG IT. That will restart the entire process. Instead, just wait. Leave your phone be and don't close iTunes.
We've successfully activated five different iPhone 3Gs with error screens just by letting them sit plugged in for anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes. Hopefully that might work for you, too.

    Re: iPhone Upgrade Hell

I did my upgrade to 2.0 yesterday with only minor problems getting the software download properly.

Please remember to sync your iPhone before installng the software upgrade. I heard a horror story of someone losing info.

While talking to ATT today, they told me people were calling in complaining about the iPhone only being able to make emergency calls.

I am ever so happy with the upgrade.

    Re: iPhone Upgrade Hell

    Out of curiosity, I
    headed
back to the store around 1pm to see how long the line was:

There were about 300 people there.

My phone is now working again with 2.0 installed. So far, so good. I bought a puzzle bubble type game and think I'll get the Super Monkey Ball as well.

    I'm a big time sucker.

It took forever to update iTunes last night/early this morning. Synched up my iphone, but did not install v2.0 yet.

Will be buying one for my wife and upgrading mine either today or hopefully this weekend as long as they don't sell out of the 16G's.

I've just been reading up on the different problems with activating the phones.

Super Monkey Ball is supposed to be really good!

Have you checked out the App Store via the iTunes Store? You can do a search for Free Apps. Here is a list of the free Apps I downloaded yesterday:

    AIM
AOL Radio - Searches for local radio stations based on your location. My new favorite is the KROQ 80s station.
iPint - A fun game where you can slide a pint of beer down the bar to a friend.
Jott - a voice recorder that records a written list for you in the Notes App.
Check Please - Perfect for MiceChatters who share a bill at a meet. figures out the tip and how much each person owes. Works if you are splitting a bill evenly.
CheckWord - A simple spell checker.
PhoneSaber - A simple light saber. Choose the saber color then move your iPhone around to hear cool sounds.
Light - Turns your iPhone into a flashlight.
    Zenbe - A list App.
Zip Codes - looks up zip codes.
WeatherBug - shows detailed weather information.
Spell Number - Give it a number, it spells it out for you. (I got this one for the kids.)
Save Benjis - It is like Froogle/Bizrate/Epinions. Finds the cheapest price for an item for sale online.

I also downloaded a bunch of free foreign language Apps.

The only App I purchased so far is Cookie Bonus Solitaire. It's an addiction.

My brother said that the only part of MobileMe that is working is the Mail function of the service. Apple is working on getting the contacts and calender functions to work.

These are the apps I installed a few minutes ago:

Bomerman Touch - The Legend of the Mystic Bomb - $7.99
    Bubble Bash - $7.99
Local Picks by TripAdvisor - FREE
    Photobucket for iPhone - $4.99
Remote (uses your iPhone as a control for your Mac or Apple TV) - FREE

I'm excited to finally have games. And I like the idea of the "Remote"
