Mickey Mouse Carnival - Hot! Hot! Hot!

Ahhh...Carnival season, and what time is right to post an entertainment relic of Tokyo Disneyland's past? Here is a video of a colorful and festive street show from 1991 - Mickey Mouse Carnival - Hot! Hot! Hot!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=http:...?v=X_WTatAifL8

Although I have not been to TDL, I find this video so utterly interesting because it heavily leans on the Brazilian Carnival theme, mostly focusing on Rio. Look at that Cast Member in the gown holding the show's logo flag - that's the porta-bandeira, and her accompanying king is the mestre-sala. A majority of Disney Characters (with the exception of Mickey, who is dressed as the king, and the ostriches from Fantasia, just to name a few) and dancers are dressed in Rio-inspired costumes. The music is accentuated with pulsating samba rhythms, and the choreography pretty much reflects the wonderful tunes! The color scheme is not that colorful (mostly white), but it adds to the joyous atmosphere.

Watch the video and tell me what you guys think!

There have been various special events, parades and stage shows with a Latin/South American/Caribbean theme at Tokyo Disneyland. This particular event was held from Sept. 27th to Nov. 18th, 1991. The song "HOT! HOT! HOT!" has been released in at least 3 CD's.

Re: Mickey Mouse Carnival - Hot! Hot! Hot!

This video is a great find!! Thank you for posting it!! This is the first time I get to see this special event show as I never had the chance to go to the park to see it when it played, and so far have only been able to hear the music, which has been released on CD before.
As far as I know, this special event was a direct result of the popularity that DL's 35th anniversary Party Gras event had the previous year in Anaheim. Over in TDL, this event was followed by TDL's very popular and extravagant version of "Party Gras" parade, while at the same time... WDW's MK was celebrating their 20th anniversary with a similar mardi gras parade.
As for TDL's Mickey's carnival, this was one of the first big time special event extravaganzas that paved the way for many many more events to come over the next few years. This was so popular indeed that it may have influenzed OLC into going with the Carnival theme once again in 1998 for their extremely successful "15th anniversary Viva Magic!" event. Similarly, there have been several different Mardi Gras themed productions on the Adventureland stage as well.. and to this day, "Minnie O Minnie" continues that tradition.
One thing I find interesting is how the entire show takes place in the Hub. While the hub at TDL is the biggest one ever designed, the popularity of these special events would now make a show at the hub seem impossible to pull off.. still, they do it flawlessly here. Reason why again and again, I will always argue that TDL's shows and entertainment are 2nd to none in Disney parks history.

One final point about this video link... click on the arrow to the bottom right for a drop down window if you want to watch in "HQ" quality, and also.. at the end of the video.. scroll on the other video options to see the TDL mardi Gras parade and shows from the past on the adventureland theater.

Again, thanks for sharing this video.

Thanks for posting this!

Is it just me or were there a lot of Caucasian dancers? Didn't TDL used to employ a lot more American/European performers until they cut back dramatically a few years ago?

Also, was Mickey wearing a GARTER around his leg?!?!

Yes, there used to be more caucasian performers at the special event shows. But that does not seem to be the case much anymore. Only the regular shows have them now it seems...

If Minnie can, why not Mickey?
