Re: The Lost DisneySea

Wow. I just checked over at Blue Sky Disney and they've published another post about Port Disney with some cool art that really puts into perspective what Another Voice was talking about.

Man, I wish this place had been built! I'd be spending every weekend there. It would have been so amazing.

Here's the link:

I think Another Voice has given up on finishing his post.

Re: The Lost DisneySea

No, I haven't. It's just sometimes earning a paycheck takes time from away from the fun things in life. Anyway, one of the benefits of a 14 hour flight is plenty of time to catch up. My second posting will describe the plans for the DisneySea theme park itself. A third posting will talk about the inspirations and influences the plans for other Disney parks had on the ports the made it into Tokyo DisneySea's (did you know there's a connection between Disneyland's Jungle Cruise and Fortress Explorations via George Lucas?)

Re: The Lost DisneySea

I enjoy hearing about any new attractions coming to the parks & the backstory behind them. I also enjoy this article about what could have been- basically the original plans & what actually became of them. With Disney, most of the things on paper, look much better than what becomes of them.

The imagineers, designers and developers of these projects are usually given free reign over what they propose to do, then, unfortunately reality sets in & the costs associated with these projects become quite clear.

But the OLC was willing to put up most of the costs of this project, as opposed to the pencil pushers back in Anaheim, who trashed the original idea of a Disney Sea and went with a cheaper scaled down DCA.

Due to the fact that things didn't turn out in Tokyo as originally proposed- they still did a damn good job with TDS- even if it is not what was originally developed.

Keep up the good work-even though I have seen some of this before, you've done a great job so far.

Why?! For me, learning about and imagining the "Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda" projects is 95% of the fun of discussing Disney or Imagineering on these boards/blogs. It all depends on your disposition: realist vs. idealist, rationalist vs. romantic.

Some may say ignorance is bliss (it often is) and to know what might have been is to be submerged in disappointment. But I also find that it helps me to appreciate the great things that actually were brought into reality, to learn about their history, to spark my imagination, to know our potential as creative thinkers and to allow for the hope of what could one day be.

My fascination with the woulda, coulda, shoulda is not isolated to theme parks, but extends to all my interests: mega-projects in my hometown (
Wired New York Forum - View Single Post - Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda: Grand Schemes), movies, natural history, etc.

But getting back to Disney: detailed articles such as this one on Long Beach DisneySea - or the incredibly detailed series by the Beastlie Kingdomme imagineers (Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda by Paul Torrigino (October 27, 2004)Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda by Paul Torrigino (October 13, 2004) Beastlie Kingdomme by Maggie Parr (March 8, 2006) Quest for the Unicorn by Maggie Parr (July 11, 2006) are of very high value to me.

Granted the proposals are almost always grander, more elaborate and inspiring than the reality, but it goes back to old saying about never being able to achieve perfection but never ceasing to strive for it.

It's because ideas at Disney have a way of sticking around and poping up in unexpected places. I'll have a posting describing the back ground and influences on Tokyo DisneySea - a park that benefited from "lost projects" more than any other Disney park.

Re: The Lost DisneySea

Hey, even if they don't build another DisneySEA, it's good to see what has come before. This way we know what Disney is capable of and demanding that kind of quality. Never should we settle for a DCA type park again.

Keep up the great work, Another Voice!

Agreed, Disney has a way of not getting rid of any ideas.
