This one was OK, but if you really want to see a great G flick rent the brand new Godzilla: Final Wars. In that film he takes on just about every monster Toho ever created AND he fights the fake Godzilla from the 1998 Tri Star film!
I've seen the entire 28 film series. If you have questions on the Monster King, I'm your guy. Final Wars is out on DVD now and in general, it is perhaps one of the most fun movies I've ever seen with Mutant Superhumans, a massive alien invasion, giant meteors, flying battleships and 15 monsters(most in any G-film but not all of the monsters, with MechaGodzilla, Gorosaurus, Varan, Titanosaurus, Megaguirus, Megalon, Destroyah, Biollante, SpaceGodzilla and Baragon being absent). I also recommend the rest of the post Godzilla 2000 films as well. Mechagodzilla got a nice duology with Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo SOS which is probably why he wasn't in Final Wars.
"Godzilla vs Space Godzilla" was released in 1994. Space Godzilla was a space made of Godzilla's G-Cells which somehow found themselves in outer space, and conbined with alien life forms, as far as I could understand. Space Godzilla looks pretty much like Godzilla with meaner look on his face, blueish color skin and giant crystals-like horns on his shoulders, and had different powers... such as leviation, etc etc....
Yeah. For other daikaiju you probably don't know:
Megaguirus is an extradimensional giant queen dragonfly that was brought to Earth by the usage of a Black Hole Gun(which was created as a surefire way to get rid of Godzilla) that opened a dimensional gate.
Biollante is a genetically engineered monster created by a scientist who wanted his daughter(who died in a lab accident) to remain alive forever by combining her DNA, a roseplant, and the DNA of Godzilla. After fighting Godzilla, the plant creature retreated into space through spores, possibly creating Space Godzilla.
Destroyah is an ancient creature from the Pre-Cambrian era that was revived by the Oxygen Destroyer from the original movie. The long dormant colony of ancient crab things were reawakened and merged into one colossal beast that possessed the powers of the Oxygen Destroyer(though seemingly at a smaller scale) It fought Godzilla(who was suffering from a severe case of heartburn from the unstablization of his nuclear powered heart) to the death, but Godzilla defeated him before melting with human help, as Destroyer's weakness was the cold.
There's a lot more on Godzilla and Toho's films here at www.tohokingdom.com
Also, www.tokyomonsters.com is an excellent media source for Godzilla films with clips from Final Wars.
The oxygen destroyer from the original movie?? Which begs the question: why is Godzilla still around when we saw him turned into a skeleton by that same device? I'd always thought that little fact was ignored by the following films, but was it dealt with somehow?
Apparently, it's just been another Godzilla in the Showa(50s-70s) and Heisei(80's-90's) series. Godzilla 2000 is sort of ambiguous on Godzilla's history, VS Megaguirus has an alternate history where the Oxygen Destroyer was never used and Godzilla attack Japan a few more times when advances in energy came, GMK says that Godzilla was fueled by angry WWII ghosts so he came back supernaturally, the Kiryu Saga actually has the bones being put into the body of Kiryu with a DNA computer system based on the 1954 Godzilla's DNA causing him to go berzerk and call out a new Godzilla and Final Wars doesn't explain much either, though saying that the Big G was the Earth's greatest threat until being trapped at the South Pole by the Gotengo. Too many continuities huh?
