Hopefully even more investment for the increase in visitors. If I remember right Disneysea was timed to be open for the World Cup in 2002.

i think the Japanese will host a fantastic games (I keep picturing Asimo lighting the flame) & you can bet the mascot will be super kawaii

Let's hope the logo is better than London and Sochi's.

Anyway, as for the parks, as someone already pionted out there's bound to be an influx of visitors in '20 at the least.

And I wonder on the merchandise side. I would imagine that OLC would have to get permission from the TOGOC and IOC to use the Olympic rings and games logo. Shouldn't be an issue, but no doubt if they were told no they're bound to have all sorts of merch to tie in without it. I'll bet there'll be Duffy outfits for a lot of the sports.

And I wonder if they'll have the Olympic torch relay go through the parks?

Theoretically, they do have the time if they wanted to get a third park open before the games...

If the Olympic committee wants too much money to license the logo, Disney won't pay it. They're cheap. Do we have a soundtrack CD with the voices of Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush? No. Too cheap to pay the actors for CD rights.

The only way Disney will pay is if OLC somehow convinces them that they will make lots of money.

I think. within 2020. TDR may have some event that related to SPORTs or OLYMPIC theme in that year. may be after 35th anniversary in 2018.

Disney should sign on as an official OLYMPIC sponsor and get merch rights.

Los Angeles is competing for 2024, and this could be the beginning of a beautiful symbiotic relationship.

It's not really as simple as a marketing deal to use Olympic branding on your stuff that you sell. The IOC (which made $2 billion in marketing fees during London) is incredibly protective over the usage of the logo. If Disney slaps the logo on Duffy (if they would ever acquire the rights to do so), I can pretty much guarantee if would clash with Japan's "official" Olympic mascot/plushs and Olympic Duffy would be nixed immediately. Now if they somehow got Duffy AS THE OFFICIAL MASCOT... that's another story! Even thought it's not likely, I think it'd be a fabulous idea especially given to dumb/bizarre the Olympic mascots always end up. If Duffy doesn't have a shot, maybe Ghibli can make one.

It's incredibly expensive to become a Global Olympic Partner, and it's never a one off deal- it's around $65 million a year for 8 years. There are usually less than 10 global partners on earth. Even year-specific partners need to shell out around $40 million per year for 4 years to be allowed to use the logo. "Supporters" have very strict usage rights and pay $20 million a year but I doubt Disney would be able to use the logo on park merchandise and such.

Disney can obviously afford any of those, but if they deem it not profitable or helpful to the brand, why does it make them cheap? I can think of plenty of other ways to call Disney cheap but not paying through the nose for something that may no synergize well with their marketing isn't cheap- it's just good business sense. I'm not saying it wouldn't be a good idea for them, maybe they'll deem it worthwhile but in the end this is probably a decision that requires a bit more thought than just dumping that kind of money into anything before they know it'll be of use to the company.
