No wifi in parks. Best to rent your own device before you go or at the airport.

Yes, agree with Roger. At the airport there are several vendors and it is very easy to rent a phone or rent a wifi hub if you don't need actual cell service for phone calls. The wifi hub can be used for internet connections on several devices at once and you can use skype. Docomo is a good provider Restaurants & Shops Terminal 1, Central Bldg, 4th Floor docomo World Counter Narita 1 | NARITA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT OFFICIAL WEBSITE

This is exactly what I have planned to get for our trip in March. Quick question... Do you know if you can TEXT using those?

You'd be able to text using a wifi hotspot if both you and the recipient have iPhones-- iMessages are sent via wifi if cellular is not available.

IF you can find free WiFi, which is very rare in Japan you can iMessage if BOTH users have iPhones. iMessage is not texting so I don't think it applies to the question being asked.

True texting (SMS) is also very rare in Japan. In all my many times in Japan I've never used SMS mainly because no one I would text in Japan uses SMS. Everyone uses mobile email which used the data network.

I beleive SMS is possible depending on the carrier service you choose. My impressions is that it is very pricey. Check with the cellular provider you will use while in Japan.
