    Oriental Land Company

I know that the Oriental Land Company owns TDR, but do they maintain it, or is that Disney's job. Tokyo is one of the most succeccful, and one of the best (in manys' opinions) Disney resorts, and has some of the best themed rides. Tokyo Disney Sea is probably one of the best themed and most elaborate Disney parks of all. Do you think this is because of the OLC owning it. I basically just wanted to know what part Disney has in the resort.

    Here's what I've heard:
    1. OLC owns the parks.
    2. OLC maintains the parks.
    3. OLC pays Disney for the right to use the Disney name. I think it's some percentage.
    4. OLC pays Disney's Imagineering some juicy consulting fees to create the attractions (and TDS).
    5. OLC is bound by the contract to maintain the high quality that you see there. Don't know what it would do if it weren't bound to it, but Disney (back in the day that the contract was signed) wouldn't want its name on a shabby product.

Disney has the exclusive design contract for the rides, and they get a liscensing fee.
    OLC runs it.

Also, OLC is responsible for all marketing and promotion of the Parks within Japan. Up until a few years ago, they were able to promote within the Far East Asia region. However, when HKDL was announced, Disney requested them to stop.

If Disney maintained TDR, it would be trashed as WDW is now a days. Thankfully for us, NO other company knows and plays by Walt's own lagcy than OLC, therefore the resort's maintenance is the best there is of any Disney Resort on Earth.

Yes, they own the Disney-brand hotels, all of Iksipiari, the monorail, the transport systems around the Resort (except JR), and some off-site property and commercial ventures (restaurants, bakeries, etc.)

With TDS in a hole they should go to Bob & John and offer them a proposal to take a greater investment in the parks and have a share in it's profits. Of course, they should also insist on something in writing that OLC continues to maintain the actual operations.

The reason I say this? TDS is a world-class destination built in response to a market that wanted something more like a half-day park with a lot of characters. There's an unusual campaign by Disney to almost compete against TDS by keeping people unaware of it, and it's ridiculous that the company is playing competition against, of all things, a Disney park.

Don't think they won't go for it, Iger sees money in Japan. But by strengthening ties and giving Disney a piece of the actual gains from the resort, this campaign where Disney practically obscures TDS from the American tourist's radar will come to an end, and OLC won't be in such financial hurt from misjudging their audience and building a park that didn't pay off with their chief visitor's profile.

There are many other ventures and subsidiaries besides TDR under OLC's umbrella and you can read all about them in their site..
    Just need to explore around.

They even wanted to start up a non-Disney theme park in Japan too.
Don't know if that is still a desire or not.

Is there any truth to the story that they were involved with Nara Dreamland?

Meh. It's in the contract that they're forced to. I'll get a source in a minute. (edit: I can't find it. Thought it was something that Jim Hill wrote once. (Not that he will be accepted as a source by some.))
It's also the best way to run a Disney park. Even Disney knows that. That's why it's in the contract. Pressler and Weiss weren't/aren't bound to a contract, though.

Disney gets a percentage of revenue already.

Don't OLC also own all the Disney store's in Japan.

Tokyo Disneyland is one of the biggest mistakes that Disney has ever made,as from my understanding from reading Eisner's book Disney were offered a lot more then just a small share in profits but didn't want to take the risk in the venture,so just opted for the current deal. This has resulted in Disney loosing millions in lost profits and making OLC very rich.

So then why the "competition through obscurification" stategy against TDS? It practically NEEDS the international visitors that would be wowed by it since the Japanese audience is more interested in the more cartoony world of TDL. Especially since Sea has put it's parent company into a hole (and they're still digging,) it could put them back on track and get the park where it should be if they offered a share of the pie that would make Disney WANT to market it.
