Do I need to speak Japanese?

I will be going to Tokyo in September and plan on visiting Disneyland. BIG THRILL!!!! I do not speak a lick of Japanese and was wondering how much of a language barrier there will be in the parks?
I mean, will I be able to understand the dialog in the HM? Do the face characters speak English? Will the shows be in English and Japanese? Do they have a PAL Mickey setup? Should I just take a quick class at Berlitz?

I bet if the rides are all said in Japanese, you may have to pick up a translating machine somewhere on Main Street. I think all Disney parks have the service available for people who can not understand a certain language that is being spoken.

I am also under the impression that in the rides, the audio is said in Japanese and then English. I can be wrong, but that is what I heard.

Re: Do I need to speak Japanese?

There is no quick class in Japanese... 4 years of Japanese will usually teach you the same as 1 year of Spanish.

That said, you'll have no problem sometimes mostly probably.

Japan uses a LOT of english these days, though not very perfect. Anything written will be in English and Japanese. Anything spoken -- well, it all depends on the situation.

Many people don't know Japanese at all and they have a great time there. Just go and have fun.

Well, there's no "quick" class if you want to really learn Japanese. However, you
can learn some phrases enough to help you get by.

I know that TDLFAN et al will know for sure.. but here's my take.
    * All signage is in English and Japanese. (actually I believe it's actually
    English that's more prominent).
    * The attractions & shows are in Japanese (like HM). But some which allow it have
    subtitle in displays in English.
    * I have not heard of a translation system/box or PAL setup either.
    * Many CMs speak english. English speaking CMs have a special buttons.
    * Don't know about the Face chars. But the guess is that many are from US.
    * There are english speaking tours and an english version of the map available at the City Hall

Anyway, you'll probably get a more authoritative answer from someone like
    TDLFAN. :-)

Have a great time in "Nihon"!

But isn't there a device the OP can rent at Tokyo Disneyland that lets him here the ride audio in English?

Thanks for the info everyone! I thought as much but wanted to make sure. I was just kidding about the Berlitz course. I took one of their courses to learn German and it was a hoot! I can order 50+ types of beer in German. And I don't even drink!!!!!!!!! LOL!

I also spoke to a CM friend that assured me I would have a great time

No Pal Mickey, I'm afraid. The only resort with Pal Mickey facilities is the Walt Disney World Resort, but I've heard rumours of the Disneyland Resort being fitted with capabilities.

WDC has taken patents in Japan on the technology used for the "Pal Mickey" service.

No. TDR parks do not offer that service. However, some shows do have an english phone-like hook you can listen to, such as HISTA (TDL's Microadventure). TDS' 3D show in Arabian Coast do provide some type of translator available in that show ONLY. Ask a CM for it.

BTW... I do not speak/read japanese and do just fine. There will be a CM available to help or find you someone who can speak english. Otherwise.. learning japanese is not a bad idea if you ask me...

You don't need to learn Japanese, but learning a FEW words will go along way. Try and learn phrases like Thank You, Please, Excuse me, etc...

Oh ... and it will probably be hot in September still, so you might want to ask for KORI ... (ice).

That's because online traslators suck with Japanese.

易しい in this context means "easy," not "plain."
