Last July 25th, I had the chance to go to TDL to check out this summer's new short term offerings at the park... The new summer castle show "Cool the Heat" and a very small one-float parade which I will call "Goofy's Cool Service" but that is not the correct name. Forgive me.
Anyways.. it was not a good day at TDL to see these offerings since it happened to be a rainy day. So getting more water dumped over my head was not my idea of fun at TDL during inclement weather. However... If I was here on a sunny, muggy and humid day, these new shows at TDL would have been a welcomed relief. Nevertheless, the new show and mini parade were lots of fun to watch and enjoy!
First up, the castle stage show "Cool the Heat". This is a short 7 minute show which is presented 4 times daily. The kicker is, each show through the day is slightly different and features a different character. One version features a rapping Mickey, the other version features Minnie, the 3rd version features Donald, and the last version features Mr. & Mrs. Incredible. The version I saw was the Incredibles and that is the version photographed in my album. However, if you want to see all 4 versions, you have to come and see the 4 shows presented throught the day.
The show revolves around Goofy trying to fix water leaks around the castle... but then, this being Goofy, you know mayhem will ensue. And it does in grand style. Once the opening sequence of the show starts, the 2nd act features the character presented on this particular version. Today, I got to see Mr & Mrs Incredible shaking their tush along with 4 other dancers in a medley of songs like " I need a hero" and "Cartoon Heroes" etc etc.. Once Act 3 starts.. the show music turns into a frenetic eurodance number which I will call "Splash! Splash! Splash! Splash!" (note every "SPLASH!" scream comes accompanied with a water blast of varying degrees of preassure, so be advised to keep your cameras and expensive equipment protected)
After a huge watery finale, the show quickly ends.
Some technical aspects of this presentation here... The show lasts only 7 minutes and while Act one with Goofy and the 3rd frenetic SPLASH! finale are essentially the same, Act 2 is what makes this show unique, as I previously stated... there are 4 versions of act 2, each offering a different Disney character. It's a very clever idea for a small short term summer show and a well thought out twist that exceeded my expectations, since you never know ahead of time what version you will get to see. Also... about the water effects.. they appear to be simple but trust me, this is where the show is a little gem from a technical point of view. The castle has been equipped with very well conceiled water cannons and fountain equipment that is not apparently visible to the guests. Water and mist is shot off the castle turrest and stage below with furious blasts or elegant swirls of fountains, or clouds of mist, or any combination of the three alone. I can only imagine all the work it took to install all of this plumbing to reach the highest parts of the castle, plus to make sure the water shoots off with such preassure from the top of the castle is just awesome to see. And here at home I can't get decent preasure from my 2nd floor shower heah in my master bathroom...
The performers get soaked and it is admirable that they perform on a very wet stage with water coming down at them for most of the time. Likewise, guests get a good amount of water tossed at them again. Hoses shoot water from the castle towers on either side of the stage area, or from either side of the stage ends, or simply from the CM's themselves who at one point in the show come out with hoses and spray the audience. It's a cute little show with a lot of water flying around and it is perfect to cool off while at TDL.. if you do not mind getting wet that is. A show CD containing all 4 versions of the show is on sale at TDR now.
Likewise the small one-float parade with Goofy is cute as well.. and with a float that seems to be some rain catching gizmo machine of sorts. The float, used daily for now (but becoming the park's rainy day parade float later after the summer ends I am told) is very whimsical and sprays water from many areas, including an intermitent water blast from the top of it. Goofy again seems to be having a hard time making sure his water machine operates perfectly. This frenetic pace of the show on the float has Goofy moving energetically all over the float..as one moment Goofy is on top of the float, and the next he's sliding down a pole or jumping off a trampoline that shoots water off to the guests as Goofy jumps on it. Very cute but very small and brief show. Ths CM playing Goofy must be in very good shape to maintain such a frenetic pace for the 25 mins or so that it may take the float to go around the entire parade route.
However...bottom line is.. these two shows are unique to TDL at this time and they are fun! fun! fun! in the most simplistic of ways. So try to catch them or get an idea of the show and mini parade by looking at these photos... Enjoy.
TDLFAN says 3 stars! Go check it out before the summer season ends in Aust.
