Tokyo Disneyland is rumored to be sinking, according to Cyzo (July).

The Pirates of the Caribbean attraction will be re-opened on July 20 after refurbishment, but there's a rumor floating around that the ride had to be fixed because it wasn't, well, floating.

"Tokyo Disneyland is built on reclaimed land, so it's only natural that it sinks, but the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in particular is hard on the ground," an insider associated with the work being done on the attraction tells Cyzo. "The construction work we've been doing has been to upgrade the ride, but it's also been about the subsidence."

I'm surprised no one really noticed at Disneyland that the Matterhorn didn't sink after the Sub lagoon was drained for so long due to construction.

TDL has ALWAYS been sinking. they have had to shore up the castle for years as it sinks unevenly. When they build a new ride they bury styrofoam blocks to support the buildings as it is one big soggy landfill.

One of the reasons why TOT was delayed as far as I know is because of that possibility. I guess they had to figure out how to reverse the possibility of the ground giving in..

So in the last earthquake to hit Tokyo, did liquifaction happen at TDL? (liquifaction is when the soil becomes like water) That did a lot of damage to San Francisco's Marina District in '89. Hong Disneyland would be in the same boat as TDL because it's also on reclaimed land.

Any patricular reason why you are wishing ill will on the foreign parks?

Anyways, it does not surprise me given that it is on reclaimed land. I'm sure they will do anything they can to shore up the park.

Actually, check out Mexico City. Much of that was a lake when the Aztecs settled the area. It wasn't until after Cortez conquered the Aztecs they reclaimed land from the entire lake. There are a lot of sinking buildings there, but the subway might be what's helping to keep them from sinking further.

Yes. Most of the Tokyo Disney Resort sits on top of what used to be part of Tokyo Bay.
