New Fox Musical TV Series - Glee (Merged)

Fox launched a new series following last night's performance of American Idol called "Glee." It is a high school musical type show with a bit more reality and grit. The kids in the Glee Club are the outcasts of the school but their plight leads to both heart and a great musical score to the show.

Last night's show was just a teaser. The show won't really debut until the Fall season begins in September.

I wasn't expecting much from the show. In fact, I figured that Fox would either attempt to skewer Disney's High School Musical or copy it. In reality, they created a show which may have been inspired by Disney, but which is truly unique with a fantastic cast and interesting plot potential.

Did anyone else watch the first episode of Glee? What did you think?

Re: New Fox Musical TV Series - Glee

It was good. Just ok. But knowing it was just the first "intro" ep and seeing the previews of the season, I think it has great potential!!

But so trippy to see 3 actors from Heroes! I wonder what the connection is?

Which 3 actors from Heroes? I saw Jayma, and the wife... Who was the other one? I saw Miley Cyrus's boyfriend in it.

I liked it! I liked it a lot! I thought it was funny and sweet.

Jane Lynch was hilarious, even if her role wasn't as big as I was hoping. She pretty much made the show for me.

Re: New Fox Musical TV Series - Glee

I am in love with the Glee cast version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," I bought it off iTunes after seeing the preview after Idol last night. The show obviously borrows from HSM, but the star characters' performances make up for anything that might be lost with the comparisons. I can't wait to see this show when it begins later this fall.

According to Hollywood Insider,

Quote:
Fox can't be entirely happy [with the Glee preview]. It held on to less than half of its tailor-made Idol lead-in and, more worrisome, dropped 3.5 million viewers over the course of the 60 minutes. The episode will be available on the network's website throughout the summer, leading up to the series' fall bow, which, of course, will be the true test.
After all the commercials for Glee that aired during Idol commercial breaks, I'dve thought the preview would have more of an audience.

Jane Lynch is always fantastic. She's a really nice lady, too...we were on the same flight from WashingtonDC/Dulles to Long Beach and sat together in the waiting area. She had a nice chat with my then-5-yr-old son about her shoes and her phone!

Re: New Fox Musical TV Series - Glee

I'm a sucker for it. Love the underdog/cool kid interaction, and the songs came 'round frequently enough to keep me humming them the rest of the night. I also like that the kids have as much to teach the teacher about life as he does them.

Cop Rock? I think not. A police drama with singing, dancing cops was doomed to failure. In a show about a glee club, one would expect music and dancing. And the kids did a credible job. I do think the comedy writing, while adequate, could be a whole lot tighter.

Cop Rock failed because it was focus more on Broadway music and not enough on the characters of the show. Also at the time the audience wasn't looking for musical shows. Cop Rock wanted to be another BBC's Pennies from Heaven, which was superb then Cop Rock. Also Pennies from Heaven had Bob Hoskins, who was very talented. Steven Bochco had other television series hits such as NYPD Blues, L.A. Law and Hill Street Blues.

Re: New Fox Musical TV Series - Glee

Dustin and i both watched Glee last night and we both thought it was fantastic! not only were the musical numbers great, but the storylines and characters are vastly more intriguing than HSM. i for one can't wait for the series to start in the fall

I actually liked Cop Rock, It was different, way ahead of it's time, and Randy Newman wrote the songs if I remember correctly.
