You can TOTALLY do everything in one day. There's really not much to do and see. Just keep in mind, the tram tour is about 45 minutes.

Re: UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD - Busy in October?

I'll just list a few things they got:

    Upper Lot:

The Creature from the Black Lagoon musical

    The Simpsons ride

    Studio Tour

    Curious George soak playground

    Shrek 4D movie

    Blues Brothers show

    Water World show

    Universal's Animal Actors show

    Terminator 2: 3D movie

    House of Horrors scary maze

    Lower Lot
    Special Effects show

    Backdraft presentation

Universal Experience - behind the scenes stuff

    Mummy The Ride rollercoaster

    Jurassic Park the Ride

So when you put it all together, there's only 4 rides, and the rest shows.

I'd even go so far as to say that you can see/ride everything within a day on any given day of the year.

If you go at opening, bear in mind that the lower lot opens anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes after the gates open in which case you should do things on the upper lot first.

From a person who's only been to the Studios in Hollywood once - you can get it done in one day if you have a plan. Here's what I did, and worked great -

    1) When the main park opens head straight for Simpsons
    2) By the time you exit the Lower Lot should just be opening - head down the Starway
    3) Hit Mummy - you have time to do it 2-3 times if you'd like
    4) Hit Jurassic Park - again, you can do this multiple times if you wish
    5) For convenience sake, hitting Backdraft and the Special Effects Stages are probably good options at this point so you don't have to backtrack down the giant Starway again.
    6) Once back in the Upper Lot hit the Backlot Tour.

After that, you've hit all of the things that create bottlenecks/long lines. If you encounter large crowds at Mummy or want to ride again later in the day, I whole-heartedly recommend the single riders line - gets you on in under 15 minutes usually. Other than that, everything else is show-based or exhibit-based, so take your time and choose what you'd like. We got everything we wished to do (note no Shrek or Terminator as we have those in Florida) done by early afternoon in mid-summer. In October you should be more than okay.

    Have a fun trip!

The first weekend in October is the start of Halloween Horror Nights so the park will close a little early and all the decorations will be out. Im pretty sure the show schedule will be different if they even run during the day (water world will be showing rocky horror picture show at night so water world might not be running.)

Rocky Horror is in the Terminator theater. Waterworld becomes Slaughterworld.

I lived in Hollywood for 8 years, just 5 minutes from Universal, and used to go quite a bit before I moved close to Disneyland. I would agree with this completely. Universal can be done in a day almost all year long. You may want to watch the start times of some of the shows, and plan accordingly.

As an APer for Universal, I can honestly say you can do just about everything on any given day of the year. Even during the summer, which is a peak season, we pretty much can do everything that we want to do. I went yesterday just for a few hours and we had done a lot of attractions in just that short amount of time. If you go at opening and stay until closing, I can almost guarantee that you'll be able to see everything in the park, as long as you don't dillydally like we do. ^_^
