King Kong Encounter vs. King Kong 360 3D

I was a HUGE fan of the original King Kong on the Studio Tour. When it burnt down, a tear formed in my eye. Then I heard it was being rebuilt and they weren't even going to use an animatronic, which I thought would've looked amazing considering what they could do with technology now. I was open to 360 3D, but I knew nothing could match being up close and personal with the Kong and it's banana breath. And then Halloween Horror Nights came along... and I experienced what was the most intense 3D experience I think I've ever had. I fell in love with the new King Kong on the Studio Tour. I still can't decide whether or not it's better than the original but I do know that I love 360 3D. What say you guys? Which is better?!

The original animatronic Kong was an overall better experience. It had a scene which set up what was going on and then you encountered the big guy. Plus the motion effect of the tram. It was pure Hollywood magic.

I like the new Kong 360 as well. But the new show doesn't have any set up. You drive into a barn. The lights go out. The movie starts playing and then you drive out. It it good, but just seems to be missing something.

Good stories have a beginning, middle, and end. This one is all middle, middle, middle. Judging from the success, I would like them to revisit this attraction and give it a bit of a setup and grand conclusion.

They also need to fix the routing of the trams and figure out how to reopen the collapsing bridge. In fact, that bridge could be a great setup for Kong.

It is a cool experience even though it just technically a movie. The whole thing is an illusion so it does fulfill its purpose. I personally like the new one better because 1) It feels more realistic 2) You are not stationary the entire time when yo are in the middle of a fight unlike the original Kong. You are actually moving and being pulled into a Canyon; not just merely being rocked back and fourth on a bridge. Finally, 3) They have used 3D that has never been done before. You are in an open-air vehicle with a roof over it surrounded by 3D screens. This is why I prefer the new one over the original.

I had a chance to see the original King Kong before the 2008 fires and the King Kong 360 3D last year. And I honestly can't decide between the two. Both are great IMO.

I agree with Dusty that the collapsing bridge can be intergrated somehow. Perhaps redressing that to an area of Skull Island perhaps?

Re: King Kong Encounter vs. King Kong 360 3D

I personally feel like Kong 360 3D has completely ruined the flow of the tram. Not to mention it was shoehorned in front of the historic collapsing bridge. I feel like the original Kong was located better, it was transitioned into better, instead of randomly mentioning peter jackson. But it didn't age very well and I think 360 3D is way more fun. So it's really hard to answer, they were both great and cutting edge additions to the tram tour, so it's really tough to decide which is better.

I agree that the location is kind of a problem. The original was integrated better, felt like you were actually going onto a movie set and got a good surprise (pretty much like Earthquake). This one, although there is no "story" to the Studio Tour, feels kinda random and out of place. Especially with it in the way of the Collapsing Bridge, which EASILY could've been integrated. At least have something there so we can look at it with fog moving across the lake and a car trapped on the bridge, threatening to fall.

ST trams do go over the Collapsing Bridge after exiting KK360:3D. It doesn't happen for every tram though.

Re: King Kong Encounter vs. King Kong 360 3D

I went on the new King Kong during last year's HHN and hated it! I think it's because I was sitting on the side of the tram and I could see the black matting on the top and the bottom of the screens. I thought that the screens would wrap around much better than they were, but the fact that I could see the top and bottom of the screens totally ruined any sense of reality for me.

For this reason I voted that I liked the old kong better.

Of course next time I will sit in the middle of the row and that should improve the experience. But needless to say I was very disappointed with it.

Yeah I was there a bout 2 weeks ago and went over it.

As for the new kong...I me a lot of work went into it...but.....the old one was just better....if the Screen was 360 (do they know what that means) and you could only see the forest when you are ride it then maybe I would be like WOW but as for now its just two big screens showing me Kong fighting

Well lemme tell you, I sat in the middle and it was amazing. I couldn't see the top or bottom of either screen nor could I see up toward the front (we were the third car) so it really seemed like it was 360. I loved it.
