Media International Business/Urgent Breaking/Disney GOODBYE "Walt" DISNEY...

My friend who is a Disney employee posted this blog on Facebook, I have no idea the legitimacy of this; however, it is an interesting read, if not very sad:

    (LOS ANGELES)
In a way I am actually glad that the memory of the greatest entertainer who has ever lived will no longer be misused. In a not so surprising move, The Walt Disney Company has made the decision to remove “WALTS” name from its family film division. The name on the very familiar castle logo will simply be “DISNEY”. Tradition has no place in this new Disney. The creative founder of the company will no longer be honored for his contribution on building an empire of creative, imaginative, unprecedented family entertainment. He once said, “Let us never forget, it all started with a mouse.” But the truth is, It all started with Walt Disney. It was his vision, drive, uncompromising quality and his ability to press all around him for pure excellence that created a legacy and an example of dreams to reality. He showed us all that if we can dream it, we can do it.

I posted this in the business section, but also wanted to share it with those of us who frequent the Disneyland board.

I hope this isn't true. If so, it truly is a sad and cold move.

It's not true. The post in the OP link is simply an editorial, feeding off recent discussions surrounding the change in the studio vanity cards (the splashy studio artwork seen before a movie starts), which is durrently being discussed and debated in other threads here. There is absolutley no truth to the allegation that any of the Disney companies are changing their names to remove "Walt" from the name. Currently, the names of the companies are, and remain:

    Walt Disney Pictures and Television
    Walt Disney Animation Studios
    Pixar Animation Studios
    Walt Disney Pictures
    Touchstone Pictures
    Disneynature
    Hollywood Pictures
    DisneyToon Studios

JHM has an article about the real reasoning behind it, according to his sources.

TPA is now tweeting about it:

    TPAMagazine Theme Park Adventure

Reading breaking news that Disney is removing "Walt" from its movie division. Truly amazing. How about removing "Iger" from its payroll?

Re: Media International Business/Urgent Breaking/Disney:GOODBYE "Walt" DISNEY...

    It's a fact, folks.

There's a discussion and a poll about it in the Entertainment Lounge's Movies forum. The thread is titled "Walt Disney Studios taking the 'Walt' out of Disney."

Check it out, and cast your vote if you like or dislike the new Walt-less Disney movie card. (So far the poll is running 100% against.)

Hard to tell what's sadder in all this -- corporate Disney continuing to distance itself from its own legacy (except, of course, when it uses Walt as a marketing tool), or the specious spin it's putting on the story.

I noticed that when I saw The Muppets last week. Something kind of put me off at the start of the movie, but I didn't realize what was different until seeing it again this past weekend.

And the same much a do about nothing happened with Apple dropped Computer from it name. Or when Disney dropped the "'s" from DCA's name.

Its not like I say I'm going to see a "Walt Disney Movie", I say I'm going to see a "Disney Movie." Trying to run a company as "How would _____ do it?" is just a way to slowly ruin a company. Companies need to constantly evolve to stay current and not fall by the wayside. I personally think that it would hold them back to keep Walt in the title cards. Walt didn't make that movie, it is not a "WALT DISNEY" movie. They don't need to hold them selves to some style of movie now. Will they start releasing movies they wouldn't have? Likely not, but now they have a little more flexibility.

It is funny really. There are people who find it bad when the company uses Walt as a marketing tool. But stop using him as a marketing tool, and the same people have a problem with it...

This was an April Fools joke posted a year and a half ago on Blue Sky Disney. Disney is not removing Walt from the picture.

The only humor here is the sad joke about a media corporation that doesn't get the difference between marketing and legacy, between imitation and innovation, between sales and soul.

This is just the latest display of the sterile corporate groupthink that brought us One Disney and Disney Parks®.
