While I did enjoy this movie, I didn't find it to be anything stellar. The plot twist was fairly predictable early on. Every time I saw James Franco I kept thinking, "hey look... Harry Osbourne is the Wizard."

Again, while I did enjoy the movie I didn't think it was anything special. Compared to recent Oz endeavors I found it surpassed Return to Oz by leaps and bounds, however, it doesn't hold a candle to Wicked.

Planes (was supposed to go direct to video but someone saw $$$$$)

    Can't Wait to See:
    Iron Man 3
    Monsters University
    Thor: The Dark World
    Saving Mr. Banks

    Undecided:
    Frozen
Same. I'm still waiting to see a trailer from Frozen.

There is such a thing, where a really talented director ... and a really talented female lead (of "witchly" type powers) can come off with personality and conviction -

If you've never sat through the 3 Lord of the Rings films ... watch Cate Blanchett -

It is possible to have someone who is demure, and gentle .... but talented enough ... with the right director .... to convey more than 1 emotion.

    Michelle was flat, 1 dimensional.

Yet ... Michelle got high acclaim for playing Marilyn. And she's proven her talents in other projects.

I think Raimi didn't pay enough attention to her character's persona.

ORDDU: Totally disagree with you on that one, Tomorrowland 1967. Michelle was perfect as Glinda just the way she was. You can think she was bland all you want to if it so pleases you. Not everyone sees things the way you do.

I don't know if it was Yosemite Sam or the Witches who said it, but I'll agree that "Great and Powerful" was an improvement over "Return to Oz."

Newsflash .... I didn't force on to myself to dislike her performance - I sadly just found it to be disappointing, when I wish it wasn't.

The movie was very entertaining. James Franco was great as Oz, Zack Braff was great. I honestly didn't think Mila Kunis could be the Wicked Witch of the West, but I was proven wrong.

Much like Alice, it's ripe with CG laden effects, but I love that Sam Raimi decided to use alot of practical sets as well. So yes Oz was a great movie, and a wonderful precursor to one of my favorite films of all time(the 1939 MGM film). But the sequel will probably be a remake of the Wizard of Oz.

Oh, and the trailer for Jurassic Park 3D was phenomenal.

    First the positives:
    * The first 20 minutes
    *The last 20 minutes
    *Stromberg's beautiful designs
    *China doll
    *The score by Danny Elfman
    *Rachel Weisz

    The Negatives
    * Every actor not named Rachel Weisz (Especially Franco)
    * The mess of a plot between the first 20 and the last 20
    * Did I mention the plot was really forced with no build at all?

Saw it at the Piocchio Theater on Sunday.

It was pretty good. Not Ozcar worthy. (see what I did there?)
My suspicions about the 3D are verified: It is a distraction, as if the team has to think up ways to throw things at the crowd.

Kunis played her role quite well imo.

Review: 'Oz' prequel lacks heart, has courage

You've got to have courage to take on a film that's as beloved as "The Wizard of Oz," but a heart and a brain help, too. Prequel "Oz the Great and Powerful" could use a little more of both.

    Howdy Pards,

Well...in spite of all elitist, cynical, critical opinions to the contrary, OZ The Great and Powerful appears to be performing even better than the folks at Disney hoped it would.

The reason is quite simple...it is a delightful movie! Destined to become a classic.

And...it is worthy of the name Disney. Folks are returning to the theaters to see it again...as well they should.

I wonder how all the negative critics are feelin' about the fact that the people are completely ignoring them? Ahhh...the truth of the matter is...the word is out...this is a Great film...a great adventure into a wonderous world of imagination. It will be joining the billion dollar club, I believe...I predict. And, somewhere far, far above...a real wizard...a wizard named Walt Disney is smiling.

Go see it. And go see it again!

Adios for now. Talk to ya on down the trail.

I can hear the bronco's neighin', I can hear the cowboys sing,
I'd like to be in Texas for the Round-up in the Spring."

Down 47% in its second week against weak competition. OK we have a difference in perspective - try taking those 3-D glasses off now.

    Howdy Pards,

The fact of the matter is that OZ has brought in

    Worldwide: $281,826,000
That is not bad...for two weekends at the Box Office. The truth is, it's fantastic!

Yes, my friend, we do indeed have a difference in perspective...you want to believe that it is bad...I believe it is not just good, but great...a classic. And, I believe the figure quoted above indicates that my 3 D glasses are not rose-colored at all. The truth of the matter is that I left my 3 D glasses in the little box for recycling after the movie. I do not wear glasses otherwise. But, it isn't my opinion, my perspective, in the matter...it is the facts reflected both in the poll on this site and the amazing box office success OZ has, and continues, to build.

But, your opinion, your perspective, need not be based on those facts of course...and I am certainly not trying to change your opinion... The facts can, and do, speak for themselves. You...uh...may want to go see the movie again. I know I do.

Adios for now. Talk to ya on down the trail.

Re: Oz - The Great and Powerful (2013) Chat and Reviews (Merged)

According to Box Office Mojo, the film had a production budget of $215 million. It is unclear if Disney used every penny, as studios rarely brag when they come under budget (though they frequently complain about the opposite). Even if Disney made Oz for less than $200 million, the company spent millions on a massive worldwide marketing campaign. Thus, if the $215 million production estimate includes both the film's development and its ad campaign, Oz would still be $65 million below the break-even point.
This is not uncommon for Hollywood films, especially spring and summer blockbusters. It is rare that a film is able to turn a profit during opening weekend, which is why the next few weeks will be essential to Oz's overall success.

As it stands, Disney is following through with its plans to produce a sequel. This might suggest that the Mickey Mouse maker is satisfied with Oz's performance thus far, but the truth is that Disney has always hoped to turn the film into a franchise. While Alice in Wonderland was a one-off project, Oz could become a continuing tent-pole for the studio.
