Re: Will Disney's The Lone Ranger top John Carter?

Finally saw it last night. It's okay. Fun at time, but really drags for most of it. It really should have been two movies. First movie focusing on capturing Cavendish, with the second covering the rest. Ideally this story would have been set as #2 and #3. It really played out like a movie answering questions that established fans have about the backstory. I'm new to Lone Ranger in general and had no questions, and they didn't work at making me care. The whole time I had Wally Boag's joke, "The Lone Ranger is having trouble with Tonto. He just found out that kemosabe means 'Meathead' " It's an accurate nickname.

My mother, who watched the original, refuses to see the movie on the principle that Tonto was made an equal to the Lone Ranger, and not a side kick. I don't agree with that and having problem with making Tonto overshadow the Lone Ranger in his own movie. The movie would have probably been better without Depp, though I know the movie wouldn't have stalled without him. It probably should have.

Lastly, I saw the movie with a friend who seems to be single handedly trying to make the movie a box-office success. It was viewing number 7 for her. She was a big fan of the tv series and can see no flaw in this adaptation.

lol, that's funny! Well, more power to her, I can kind of relate to that with regards to other films.

Personally, although I do not feel it is the big train wreck that some critics and audience think it was, I still would not necessarily recommend it. It was kind of an uneven film, it felt like some of the weightier moments were forgotten by the next scenes because of the goofy way the two leads portray their characters. I admit I thought they were likeable together, but it would have been better for a different film. Too bad, I wanted to like it.

In any case it went over with a thud.

Well, maybe this will be a learning experience for Disney and they'll look before they leap next time.

^well to be fair if they made a movie more focused on characters and less on loud booms then I'm sure it would have cost less and made more

Also the fact that the Lone Ranger Playset sold out at Walmart Day one...means that as a whole the Lone Ranger will make more then John Carter ever could

What makes this a bigger disappointment is they had Depp. I doubt he's pleased.

Depp is an "artist" and he chooses roles based on what he feels interesting. If the movie does well or not... I'm sure he hopes it was better received but I'm sure he has no regrets about doing the movie.

As you know, they look at how his last movie opened when they negotiate his salary for the next one, and taking a hit in his box office earnings potential matters. Not because he needs the money, but because he's a superstar.

It's the curse of the Auteur-level actor. His past success and his craft seem to be deforming the projects he's in, whether due to his wishes or directors trying to make him comfortable.

Some get around this. Daniel-Day Lewis did it by... er... taking a long break and becoming an Italian shoemaker between shoots (I'm waiting to find out what he's doing this time - my money's on him becoming a Bosnian ferrier). But it's a difficult path and dangerous to the career if you mistime it or if your "return" is a flop.
Credibility is to be sought for. Credulity is not. Sadly the latter is our normal human state.

He read the script...he knew what he was getting into.....a big budge movie that was based off something no kids grew up with for over 3o years...

While other movies are just as bad...like Transformers and TMNT kids grew up with them in the 80's..90's and even now. I only know about the Lone Ranger from it being spoofed on Rugets and The Simpsons back in the 90s and I looked up what they were spoofing
