DJANGO UNCHAINED -- I. Loved. This. It was so amazingly refreshing and entertaining. Just a lot of fun to see people who know their craft and how to play in it. It all seems so effortless but it clearly was a lot of work to make it look this easy. Quentin Tarantino is a master filmmaker and violent as it is, it's also a harsher look on slavery than ANYTHING we've seen before. If you can stand the ear cutting in Reservoir Dogs, I think this is a walk in the park.

THE HANGOVER -- I have always loved this movie and it gets funnier and more enjoyable the more i watch. The performances and nuances are the real comedy here and you gotta hand it to the cast. Amazing to watch.

I just Django Unchained for the third time. It's now my new favorite movie.

Everything from the story, to the cast, to the soundtrack, to the way it was filmed was incredible. I can't recommend it enough.

Reservoir Dogs. Never seen this before. It is one of the best made films I think I've ever seen. Did I actually enjoy the experience? Well, sorta. It really just comes down to taste, and while I really liked a lot of the film, I definitely could have done without the whole torture scene that Coheteboy mentioned a few posts ago. There's a dozen other ways they could have shown how anti-social and sadistic the guy was, for me something like that is unnecessary and it's easy to see why people walked out of the theater when it first came out. I'm not adverse to violence in movies, some of my favorite scenes in other movies involve it. The filmmakers always have a purpose for the violence, but when the purpose is simply "torture porn" then it's just not for me.

Argo. I absolutely loved Ben Affleck's first two films he directed, and with all the positive reviews for this one I think my expectations for Argo were just way too high. I liked it a lot, it was absolutely well done, suspenseful and funny, natural performances, but honestly I was just expecting way too much, probably unfairly, so much to my dismay I actually walked away slightly disappointed.

Skyfall. I finally caught it. I love James Bond films, but when each successive one comes out I don't feel like I have to rush out to see it, I feel no big attachment to them like other film series, I can easily wait until the bluray, so I had no expectations of this one. So surprisingly, of all the films from 2012 I saw, this was probably the most fun I had. And ironically one of the many things I loved about the film is that it married the new Bond with some of the old nostalgic stuff that I claim to care nothing about. Q, Eve, and Mallory are all perfectly cast. All the characters are well developed and acted, and the action is great. It was just really fun to watch.

Exactly how I felt walking into Argo. Loved it! But I understand that opposite mindset all too well.

Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy - Finally, after a year or two of ownership, I finally reached and finished watching the last film in my Complete Universal Studios boxed set. I must say after a bit of a lull in energy in some of the films after A&C Meet Frankenstein, the last four in this set I really enjoyed.

The Incredible Hulk While not my favorite of the Marvel movies I decided to watch it again while I was folding laundry tonight. It is still a great movie even if it is not one of the most talked about of the series.

City Slickers I picked this up a couple of weeks ago as a five dollar bluray deal. I hadn't seen it in a few years, but still hilarious even if some joke (setting the VCR to record one show while watching another) are a little dated.

The Hobbit Loved it. And might I add that Bilbo was absolutely adorable. Loved the dwarves songs.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. At almost 3 hours it actually never felt long, it kept my attention through the whole film, each scene introducing new and interesting things to the Middle Earth universe for me, and yet I just didn't feel nearly as involved or invested as LOTR. There was some sense that they were just going through the motions honestly. While LOTR had such continual emotional weight throughout the entire 9 hours, in Journey I felt genuinely moved maybe only two or three times in all. I'm still hopeful for the next two, we'll see.

Jack Reacher. Even better than I thought it would be. It harkens back to 70’s thrillers, efficient, real stunts and car chases (no CGI, yay!), no soundtrack during the action scenes thus letting the action speak for itself, smart script with cool dialogue especially for Reacher, Cruise is pretty good as this guy, interesting detective work, and awesome direction and editing.

Re: The "What Movie Did You Just See?" thread RELOADED

Finally saw Les Miserables today. I thought it was VERY good. I haven't seen the Broadway show but I've heard the soundtrack and I've read the book so I pretty much knew the story line.

I thought all the actors did a phenomonal job except ... no, not Russell Crowe, I thought he was good ... Amanda Seyfred. She didn't fit Cosette for me at all (and I have a friend that works on Broadway who felt the same so glad to know I wasn't alone in that one). Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Samantha Barks (Epinone) were absolutely fantastic. Highlights for me were of course Anne Hathway's "I dreamed a dream" and "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables". Those two got me good.

On a totally different note, also saw Frankenweenie last night. I loved it. Very faithful to Tim Burton's original short, but took it to another level. Not sure if I liked it as much as Brave, but I liked it very much.

Only 2 Animated movies and 6 "Best Picture" movies to go before Oscar night. Watching Beasts of the Southern Wild tonight.

Just saw Gangster Squad. Loved it so much!

Let me clarify... The movie is certainly not at all without it's problems. It makes one wonder what the movie could have been without the cuts they made due to the tragedy in Colorado, but as it exists, I just had a ton of fun watching this!

Its not going to win any awards, but it was good to see a classic (or at least a play on the classic style!) Gangster movie!

Max had on a Rocky marathon the other day. They showed the first 5. I was able to watch II, III, and V. I haven't watched V since it was first in the theaters. Seeing it again made me realize why.

Re: The "What Movie Did You Just See?" thread RELOADED

A couple more Oscar nominated movies over the last 2 days, and one just because.

    Beasts of the Southern Wild

This is a weird one for me. I "liked" it, but I didn't think it lived up to the hype AT ALL. I may have liked it more if not for all the hype, but without all the hype I probably would have never seen it. My advice, if you are going to watch this, do some research on it first so you know the basic storyline at least.

    Argo

This one, unlike "Beasts" TOTALLY lived up to the hype, and then some IMO. I'm going to come out and say it, Ben got Robbed (and I'm SO not a Ben Affleck fan) and so far (even though I have yet to see Lincoln and a few other Best Picture ones) I think this is my pick for Best Picture. I think I liked Django better based on my personal preferences, but I think this is probably the better "movie" if that makes any sense.

    Dredd

I liked it, found it funny that Karl Urban didn't take off the mask at all, could have been anybody under there. LOL. Just a cool action movie, certainly worth the rental.

^ Gangster Squad is about 33% on Rotten Tomatoes right now. It's not getting any awards.

    Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

A few weeks ago I had a chance to see the Indiana Jones exhibit at the Discovery Science Center just south of Disneyland and loved it, so I've been itching to see all four films again. Raiders is one of my top ten films of all time. I even like Crystal Skull in spite of all its problems, and I'll even go as far as saying that for me it's gotten better over several viewings as things I didn't care for before are now seeming to work better for me.

I totally get that. The better made film isn't always necessarily your favorite. I like Raiders more that other films I consider better crafted.

PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS -- I have to say, I love Aardman animation but this film, while visually beautiful, wasn't enough for me. I was entertained enough that I didn't fall asleep, but it seemed targeted more for chldren and not as witty or clever as Wallace and Gromit. I haven't seen Frankenweenie yet but I can already predict this being my least favorite Oscar nominee.

LES MISERABLES -- Watching it a second time, it's better than the first time (being a les mis virgin). I have to say, it's more about the music that I enjoy so now that I know it so well, it's definitely making it less sluggish. There was still that part where Hugh Jackman was talking and then all of a sudden bursting into song... I still laughed at that.
