Shaun of the Dead. I was surprised that with all the outright laugh-out-loud scenes itís still takes its zombies really seriously. I liked Hot Fuzz too, but I think after seeing this one I now get why Marvel chose this director for Ant Man.

Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil. Between this and the above film I probably like this one better, mainly because I really like the three actors who all give endearingly sweet performances. Itís not quite as horrific as Shaun but definitely gory.

There's a lot more music in the Rock of Ages stage version, which for me is the main reason I enjoyed it.

    ZERO DARK THIRTY --
Really good! I didn't think I'd care about it because most anything around 911 just makes me uncomfortable, but I liked how they pulled it off.

    THOR: THE DARK WORLD --
Really enjoyed this! Very entertaining, doesn't move too slowly. I guess my main gripe is that we're not getting a lot of villains that I'm aware about. Just kinda seems generic. Then again, I never read Thor comic books so maybe it's my fault.

Thor: The Dark World. I really liked this too. Solid action, a few interesting plot developments, and I just love how Loki and Thor's relationship is developed - they have some nice scenes together. Great addition to the Avengers. The universe they are creating is becoming so interesting. Right now my wife is rewatching the first Thor again.

As a side note, I wonder how many people don't know versus don't care that there are post credits scenes in all the Avenger films (and sometimes also mid credits scenes). There are no less than three in this one and by the time of the last credit I'd say about 85% of the audience had left and missed the last two. For me they're worth staying for.

The Wind Rises / Kaze tachinu

The latest movie by Hayao Miyazaki. I don't know if it was because I caught a late screening and I was tired from work, but I found this movie to be really boring. It's a shame because I absolutely love Miyazaki. I don't know why he decided to make this movie. Just like From Up on Poppy Hill, this movie did NOT have to be animated. It could have very well been live action. But Poppy Hill is 90 minutes long, The Wind Rises is a little over 2 hours. I actually enjoyed Poppy Hill more.

This movie of course has such beautiful art. The backgrounds are incredible and there are many crowd scenes that blew my mind away due to how each figure is animated by hand. Ghibli has some of the most impressive artists in the animation industry. Especially since they are doing almost everything by hand.

There are some really nice moments that Miyazaki does well, such as focusing on natural elements like a babbling creek. But this doesn't help it to become a really engaging film. I'm disappointed by his latest work. If he truly is retired, then he should have ended it at Ponyo. If he has one more film left in him, PLEASE make it a magical one.

Olympus Has Fallen. This is a pretty solid red-blooded patriotic action film with better performances than an outlandish script like this deserves Ė especially from Melissa Leo. Once the raid starts itís non-stop violent intensity for the next 100 minutes. They're talking about a sequel, now I'm kinda looking forward to it.

Bridesmaids. Havenít seen this til now. Really funny and touching, filled with good characters and performances. Iím not saying anything new when I say Kristen Wiig is hugely talented.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. I liked the first film quite a bit, but this one is even better. Things I was wondering about from the first film started to come out a bit more this time, like what do people really think about that society. I would say Jennifer Lawrence gives perhaps one of the best performances ever for an action film, she is just really good in this.

This Is the End. Maybe a bit more irreverent than I prefer, but still really hilarious and a lot of fun as pseudo horror.

Despicable Me. My first time seeing this. I liked it a lot. I probably most enjoyed the jokes with the parenting themes.

FROZEN -- Entertaining but I found it a tad lacking a bit. Three stars.

I always liked Alice in Wonderland. Well, the classics, period.
Always thought Alice was so colorful and whimsical though.

As for latest movie, I just saw Saving Mr. Banks last Sunday night. I can't wait to see what people think about it.

    Personally, I loved it!
