Forgot that I watched HOT TUB TIME MACHINE last week. I enjoyed it mostly but not super.

My son and I saw Legends of the Guardians: Owls of the Ga'Hoole last night for his birthday movie. It was okay, not great, and not for super young kids because it was a bit scary...

How'd you get a copy so early? Doesn't come out for another couple weeks.

I continued my Halloween moviethon and watched:
    Scary Movie
    Scary Movie 2
    American Psycho

All great. I think Scary Movie 2 is my favourite from that franchise. The opening scene with James Woods is priceless. American Psycho has some great lines. Now I got to go return some video tapes...

    Let Me In

I'm always leery of a remake, especially when the original was so great. But this movie manages to be very faithful to the original while still being it's own movie. I was the only person in my theater which is kind of sad, this movie needs to be seen. SO much better than those "other" vampire movies.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Despite all its flaws, I still enjoyed this when I first saw it in the theaters, mainly because I felt it really captured the spirit of the previous films, particularly the 2nd and 3rd ones. Somehow Indy the character gets better with age.

14 Blades. Period kung-fu epic with a lot fantastic fight scenes and romantic Chinese melodrama. The starring actress is really good and I think Donnie Yen is becoming one of my favorite martial artists on film.

Ip Man. I think this just got a U.S. theatrical release, but the version I saw was the Mandarin DVD. Story presents a somewhat mythical version of Bruce Lee's real life teacher. Despite it winning the Hong Kong equivalent of the Oscars for best film, I didn't think the film overall was quite as good as 14 Blades, but the kung fu was definitely superior, and Donnie Yen's performance is probably better in this film.

    Repo Men

It was ok, nothing spectacular, nothing we haven't seen before. The ending was kind of trippy but I had it kind of figured out.

just checked out the Beauty and the Beast 1080p.

i'm at a loss for words.. i wont go into the movie itself since we all know it's a classic, but as far as picture quality goes, i'm amazed at how much they were able to remaster. 2D animation is definitely something i miss.. and the way it looks in HD takes me back. the first scene when Belle is walking down the dirt road into the town, it looks as if you can reach in and pick her up with your own hands!

the waltz sequence with Beast is breathtaking. the detail that just pops out at you is way more than i had ever imagined.

view in full size to see the incredible detail.. and this screenshot doesnt even do it justice..

    Continuing my Halloween moviethon...

Scary Movie 3 - Not bad for the first David Zucker installment.

Van Helsing - What can I say? Mindless fun!

Scary Movie 4 - Definitely the weakest in the series. Seriously, how many times can you watch a guy get hit in the face or kicked in the balls.

The Fly (1986 - Cronenberg's) - The first time I saw this movie I was about 12. It made me sick to my stomach then and to this day it still makes me nauseous. Having said that, it's a masterpiece! This is a true sci-fi horror masterpiece. The effects in this are amazing. Not one trace of CGI present. The make-up, the Brundle Fly costume, the Brundle Fly puppet - it really does look realistic and makes you think the telepods actually work. Jeff Goldblum delivers a great performance while he transforms into the fly, losing various bits of his face along the way and putting them into his medicine cabinet "museum". His wise-crack lines actually help you to stomach the situation. Everyone should see this one at least once in their lifetime. Great stuff.

Finally got my Beauty and the Beast blu ray. OMG. It looks like it was made just yesterday. It was spectacular! I'm so glad Disney did a magnificient job on the digital restoration.

Aside from that though, it's still one of the best movies ever. Just a beautiful story, even almost 20 years later.
