Toy Story 3 on Blu Ray. Awesome, awesome movie. Pixar's best, in my opinion and that's saying something.
Home away from Home.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Going through the HP movies in anticipation of The Deathly Hallows coming out next week.

With the run-up to Halloween, I was watching horror/Halloween movies. But now with the run-up to Remembrance Day/Veterans Day/Armistice Day, I've been watching a few war movies...
K-19: The Widowmaker (Cold War) - An underrated movie. Based on a true story. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who won the oscar this year for Hurt Locker. I found it interesting that National Geographic financd this movie. Pretty good movie about life aboard a Russian Submarine and sacrifice when the crew is endangered by a faulty reactor.
Pearl Harbor (World War II)- Just what Wikipedia says: "a love story of little historical accuracy." And that's just what it is. Better to forward right to about the 1:25 mark and watch about 35 minutes, then hit the stop button. Could've been so much better. Couldn't stand Bay's music video style camera work. But the effects during the attack scenes are pretty good.
Flight of the Intruder (Vietnam War) - Based on the book by Stephen Coonts. Pretty good movie, although in spots the acting is a little cheesy.
Empire of the Sun (World War II) - An underrated Spielberg movie. Very good. Great performance by Christian Bale in his first movie role. Malkovich is also pretty good in this. And an early role for Ben Stiller, albiet short. Interesting that this one hasn't found it's way to Blu-Ray yet.
This has an incredible score by John Williams but I always go back to Empire of the Sun and find that it's just too long or moves too slowly for me to really get on board with it. But it does have powerful moments and I do intend on giving it another go, which will make it either my third or fourth time watching.

We totally have the same feelings about a LOT of movies.
The score, one of the absolute best EVER ... without question. The movie itself has some moments of genius and with some "tightening up" could be SO much bettter. I think they could trim 45 minutes to an hour of the movie and it would be better.

Toy Story 3- We had just bought this movie recently, and watching it, it's still great even after it was in theaters. It brought back a lot of memories of when I use to have toys, and the themes and comedy are amazing. Still a great movie.
In the theater:
Secretariat - Finally got to see it. Very good movie. Malkovich cracked me up in this one like he did in RED. If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend it. Hopefully more people can get into the theater and Disney can take a hint that they can still make good movies like this and not have to rely on all that exploited-teen Disney channel stuff like Hannah Montana. I was actually surprised at the size of the audience. The movie has been playing for about a month now and the theater was more than half full. Maybe, despite its poor opening, word spread and got people into the theaters.
Karate Kid (2010)
It was pretty good, had some nods to the original but was still it's own movie. Still not sure why it was called Karate Kid when it was about Kung Fu ... but whatever.
Kick ***
Second time seeing this, so awesome.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
I'm a HUGE fan of the original film/series and had heard some questionable things about the remake. I thought the story itself was great, solid cast, etc. Had some good scares and I really liked that they didn't shy away from the Fred Krueger origin story and why he is "Freddy".
The one weak spot ... I have to say it was Freddy himself, which kind of brings down the whole movie. I wasn't expecting anybody to be as good as Robert Englund because it's just not going to happen. And I thought Jackie Earl Haley was a good choice for Freddy when I heard who was playing Freddy. But the Freddy face didn't work for me (was it CGI?) and he didn't have the "Freddy Swagger".
Let's face it, can't be a good "Freddy" movie if Freddy isn't very good. Sad too because it COULD have been really good given the cast and script they had to work with.
