    R.I.P. Ralph McQuarrie 1929-2012

This man was responsible for a big part of my movie going experience as a child. And influenced the vision of my dreams. Rest in peace and see you on the other side.

LOS ANGELES - Legendary concept artist Ralph McQuarrie has died at the age of 82, reports his official website RalphMcQuarrie.com.Known for his work in the Star Wars universe, McQuarrie also worked on the original Battlestar Galactica, with Stephen Spielberg on ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, Raiders Of The Lost Ark from the Indiana Jones franchise and won an Academy Award for his work on Coccoon.Close collaborator and Star Wars creator George Lucas posted a few words on the official Star Wars website."I am deeply saddened by the passing of such a visionary artist and such a humble man," wrote Lucas. "Ralph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision Star Wars."His genial contribution, in the form of unequaled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy," he added. "When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph's fabulous illustrations and say, 'Do it like this'."McQuarrie is perhaps best known for designing the look of Star Wars villain Darth Vader.

Such a fabulously talented artist. His illustration showing the power of the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark is my personal favorite.

He made real the concepts of Lucas' Star Wars in every important way, just as Syd Mead did with Blade Runner and Tron, informing our visions of seemingly impossible worlds in modern film.

It's really a loss but gotta hand it to him for holding out until 82. I can only hope to be as lucky! My grandma passed at 82 as well so that number kinda rings harder for me.

I was fortunate enough to meet Ralph McQuarrie couple years back and he was a gentleman.

Here's currently the one signed piece of artwork that I have on my wall...

I have another signed print that needs to be framed.

I didn't know that he created that illustration in "Raiders" depicting the Ark slaying the enemy. I thought it was an older illustration taken from a Medieval Bible. So he was even more talented than I thought.

One of the very first issues of Starlog magazine previewed "Star Wars" using McQuarrie's illustrations. The one I remember most vivdly was the painting of C-3PO and R2-D2 in the desert coming toward the viewer. This was back in 1976. These pictures got me very eager to see the movie.

There should be a sticky thread called "This Day in Disney History." The company has a long history and this would be a good way to acknowledge it. Walt was born 112 years ago; that's quite a chunk of American history and culture.
