Five Movies You Loved As A Kid That Are Actually Terrible

Nostalgia Sucks: Five Movies You Loved As A Kid (That Are Actually Terrible)

Starting with "HOOK" and "AN AMERICAN TAIL":

Okay, well you can forget those criticisms if you like. If you enjoy bad animation and forgettable songs and the fact that this is one of the gloomiest children’s movies ever made, that’s fine: you just can’t forgive An American Tail of its worst crime. Yes, the worst crime this film ever committed just happens to be the worst crime that absolutely any film can commit: it’s boring. Like, really boring.

Re: Five Movies You Loved As A Kid That Are Actually Terrible

I'm from a different generation than the five movies in the article. I can't remember five terrible movies from my childhood. However, one immediately popped into my head, and that is The Babe Ruth Story with William Bendix. Terrible film, but being a big baseball fan, we always had to watch it every time it was on television.

I LOVED "An American Tail!" Geez, I haven't seen that in forever. I also destroyed two VHS copies of Mary Martin in "Peter Pan" from the 60's because I watched that show over and over and... I don't think Mary or "Peter Pan" are terrible...just incredibly dated.

Re: Five Movies You Loved As A Kid That Are Actually Terrible

I totally relate to the idea of the article, although the 5 films listed came out when I was in high school. So when I personally think of films I saw and loved as a kid but now think they were actually pretty lame, I think of things like King Kong with Jessica Lange, or Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, or Caveman with Ringo Starr. I've seen bits and pieces of those as an adult and thought wow, those were pretty bad! Oh yeah, Battle Beyond the Stars. I can't even remember who was in that one. I'm sure there are plenty of other films.

American Tale - Yeah, it is bad, but I did love it when I was a kid
Jingle all the Way - Always sucked
    Space Jam - Always sucked
Super Mario Bros - Always sucked
Hook - I still absolutely LOVE this movie

I'll add another to the "sucks now" list: Neverending Story

Re: Five Movies You Loved As A Kid That Are Actually Terrible

I still like American Tale...and I remeber the songs other than "Somewhere Out There'. "No Cats In America" is still something that gets hummed from time to time at my house.

    And Hook is still fun.
I agree with Clinks...those other ones always sucked.

I'll add another: The Dark Crystal
I loved it as a wee one, but now I find it so BORING! The characters/puppets are still awesome looking, but not enough to save me from yawning and wishing for death.

I used to be terrified of the dark crystal as a kid, but always wanted to watch it... I remember my mom never let me watch it, but my dad would, so i'd wait for those nights she worked late...

Dark Crystal TERRIFIED me! Almost in the same way the Wicked Witch of the West did. I'd watch the Wizard of Oz, my mom would turn off the TV while Margaret Hamilton was on the screen, and then turn it back on when her scene was over.

How can Space Jam suck when its website is still online in all of its 1996 glory?

Re: Five Movies You Loved As A Kid That Are Actually Terrible

American Tail was something I enjoyed when it first came out, but it got old when my elementary school would play it when they wanted to show us a movie.
I have never seen Hook but I love the music John Williams composed for it.
Dark Crystal was a film I could never watch as a kid (just too dark), but I saw a PBS special about the making of it and I really enjoyed it.
Return to OZ absolutely terrified me. I still can't watch it.

Definitely Hook! I can watch that movie over and over, but even as a kid I wondered, "Why is it take him so long to fly?!"

Ok I must be alot older than everybody else here...LOL
    My 5:
Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
    Phantom of The Paradise
    Logan's Run
    Flash Gordon
    Return To Oz
While many of these films were beautifully done, they really feel so cheesy and dated now.

Re: Five Movies You Loved As A Kid That Are Actually Terrible

American Tail was alright but it was kind of depressing. Super Mario Bros. was the biggest disappointment of my life, I never even saw Jingle all the way because it looked so horrible, Space Jam was way overrated and I thought it was boring, and Hook is/was awesome. They should put The Wizard up on that list. That was the most awesome, incredible movie ever but I'm sure if I watched it today I'd be like wtf this sucks.
