I am sorry about your friend.

I've got to admit - if it was me, I'd probably still ride unless in terrible pain. Hopefully any surgery will help him greatly. It would be hard to lose a source of enjoyment at such a young age.

Just depends on your pain thresh hold...

(I'm 5-11, and still considered overweight... who comes up with that crap anyway? It's the Diet-Industrial complex propaganda I tell ya!) But I can tell ya after dropping the extra weight over the past year and a half I can really tell the difference with my back.

Sure I could stand to loose about 5 lbs around the equator, but I dont think I am obese

An loosing weight is a great thing. I used to have sleep apena, and then I lost 10 lbs (well lost 10 lbs of fat and put on about 5 of muscle) - no more apnea

I am not sure I'd do it if I was begging for death once I finished riding!

I wouldn't suggest it for anyone else - but we only have one go-around in this life, and I tend to overpush myself when injured. Generally to my detriment!

I'm 42, and I actually feel a bit of urgency to visit the theme parks now while I can still ride everything. Who knows what will happen in the future? I know my mother loves theme parks, but there are some rides she just can't do anymore.

On my Orlando trip last December, I eagerly jumped on everything, but some of the more extreme thrill rides (coughHulkcough), left me feeling headachy and woozy. I always prided myself on never shrinking from any ride, but that day will come eventually. Actually, some of the most spin-heavy rides make me too dizzy, and that is new.

That's actually treatable! The proper chiropractic adjustments can get rid of vertigo.
