When prices dip that low, some perks such as Extra Magic Hours, should be discontinued. Not fair for those who choose to pay premium prices to have to share space in the parks with those who choose to pay so low. How much should Disney be willing to give away for near free?
Fall travel must be looking bad right now.

Re: New Discount released....

Too bad I can't afford to go back again this year. I have to skip my usual trip in late October or early November since I don't know if I'll be working again by then or not, which means no vacation time.

Their numbers are low, so throw the bone out there and see who jumps on it. They will make their money back from the over-priced merchandise.

I was thinking the same thing. That is a great rate. I wish the Disneyland hotel in Anaheim had rates that low.

Re: New Discount released....

It certainly shows that times are tough. But for those who can afford it, now might be a very good time for a Disney vacation!

Keep in mind that Disney is cutting way back on services and entertainment this Fall. For example, Fantasmic! will only be shown two nights per week. However, this is a minor inconvenience considering that the parks will be much less crowded and your costs lower.

Re: New Discount released....

What worries me is... when prices go that low, how can they recoop a decent amount of money to spend on maintenance and other initiatives to improve the overall experience of the parks and hotels? God knows the low end All-Stars need a lot of work right now.

I can see your concern regarding this. However, if people aren't traveling, it is far better to discount and fill the rooms than leave them empty. I hotel has expenses whether or not the room is occupied. And even filling the room at cost is better for WDW since all those people will also end up buying tickets, food, and merchandise. The easiest and quickest way to lure people in to the resort is by discounting rooms first.

I think they are doing the right thing for the short term. They may have to cut back on entertainment, extra magic hours, park hours to compensate, but the key is simply to get people to the resort to spend money.

I heard that doesn't start until January 2009?

Re: New Discount released....

Yeah, what Dusty said. Since shuttering completely is not really an option, and the resort needs people to feed the rest of the 'engine' which shuttering completely is not an option. Discounting hotel rates is a safe incentive because unlike other products (such as gate, food, merchandise)- the market expects Hotel rates to be variable. So Disney can monkey with these incentives and pricing without being 'stuck' in the low prices for fear of market backlash when they raise prices back.

Great point! We live in Kansas and have annual passes for WDW but are not making a trip back anytime soon due to flight costs. Allegiant used to fly from here to Florida for cheap but they discontinued the service and the other airlines are pretty pricey. Our only hope is if we get to come down for my husband's job. (He's in roofing and reconstruction so hurricane season is always, wait and see if we get to Florida!)

I think a lot of people are more afraid of the news of high airline prices and what they see legacy carriers charging in fees and such and get discouraged.

Getting affordable airfare really depends on three things, where your flying from, how flexible you are with dates and times, and which airline. For example out of Baltimore/Washington area (Which just happens to be most convenient for me) you can still get tickets to Orlando from $89 on southwest, when they run a special it's even cheaper on Airtran airways... Provided you book at least a month or two in advance you can usually get a good rate.

Now if you try to do it though one of the legacy carriers like American or Delta be prepared to pay 2-3 times that (or even more in some cases) for a similar flight AND be prepared to make at least one stop along the way... (let's not mention the fees for checking a bag... ) Makes one wonder how they stay in business at all.

But my point is you sometimes need to go off of the bulk air travel sites like expedia and travelocity that sell the legacy airlines who lets face it really don't cater to the casual air travel croud, I think last time I flew American there was like 4-5 different frequent flyer club levels... common you either are a frequent flyer or your not no need to rub peoples noses in it...

If you shop around and you can still get some bargain airfare on the budget carriers who don't pay those sites to sell thier seats. Trick is to book early, check pricing for all carriers at all airports around you since sometimes that extra 45 min drive can save hundreds of dollars for a family going on vacation... For example flying out of National vrs Dulles, or Phili vrs BWI... which can make all the difference between going and not going.
