HELP! I'm really stupid...Marathon Weekend

I will be participating in the WDW College Program this spring, with the arrival date of January 12th. Nonchalently, I call up DVC Member Services to book a studio for two nights thinking that it's early January and that everything will be available - WRONG. This is definately a lesson to research WDW events before planning. EVERYTHING on property is currently full, minus the Grand Floridian. I'm currently waitlisted at three DVC resorts.

Does anyone have advice on where to stay if nothing is available on property? Does anyone have experience with Marathon Weekend?

(This is also a heads up to anyone planning a trip during this time...)

What about the hotels on Hotel Plaza Blvd by Downtown Disney? I've stayed at the Hilton and Hotel Royal Plaza there and both were very nice. I stayed at that "new" Sun...something hotel across from the Hilton when it was the Grosvenor a few times as well.

There are about a bazillion hotels near Disney.
Many official 'partner' hotels near Downtown Disney.
The Gaylord Palms is close, big, and nice.
Marriott World Center it big too.
There are literally dozens of budget hotels on 192, aka Irlo Bronson Highway - and also International Drive (a bit further away).
Do you have a price range? If you are looking at the lower end, I would check some reviews on Expedia or Travelocity - some of the cheap spots are a bit run down...
