The Animal Kingdom "Dinosaurs" attraction that never was

The Animal Kingdom "Dinosaurs" ride - formerly known as "Countdown to Extinction" disappointed some at its opening, but few know how much better it could have been.

Some renderings are particularly interesting as they are showing scenes that were NOT realised. Like this one below that shows a gorgeous scene that we can regret, and i have a story about it: In 1997 or so i was at WDI for a series of interviews, and in the office of a an imagineer friend i saw this painting. I asked him if it was in relation with Animal Kingdom - not open yet at that time. He answered me that it was indeed for the "Countdown to extinction" attraction and that "we would be lucky if it looks like that at the end...". He was unfortunately right, and this leads me to the biggest problem with "Countdown to extinction" - now "Dinosaur": the cuts in the budget. Personally, i still like the attraction, and i quite liked it the first time i've ride it, but when you see this kind of concept and know how great it could have been, you really not in the mood to thanks the suits who were Disney executives at that time. One more Michael Eisner "mistake" - and i'm kind - that we still regret today.

More renderings of this "Dinosaurs attraction that never was" here, in the middle of the article:

Wow, that's too bad that it could've been like that. It looks awesome.

I'm surprised it didn't end up that way. It looks like the layout down to a tee. It appears to be designed to match the "crossing the bridge" scene in the DL Indy attraction, but, we still did get the long necked Dinosaur in that particular segment.
In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate.

And those dinosaurs aren't the cartoony day-glow black-light colors they ended up using!

That ride could use a serious upgrade. Does Disney have any dinosaur-themed movies coming out?

I just have to say that, while the artwork looks cool, this is really not that different from any other Disney attraction. There's always scads of artwork that was used in the planning phases. The end product never looks like the early drawings. This is true for everything from Pirates to Space Mountain to Buzz Lightyear. It's not that unusual for an attraction to look completely different from the introductory artwork.

And that said, I still enjoy Dinosaur, although I wish it wasn't quite so rough.

What I love about the attraction is that the dinosaurs look so damn real. They look alive. Still my favorite AAs ever.

That looks incredible. I can't really comment on the differences as I spent most of this ride with my eyes closed. It scares the crap outta me.

What I think was a fail was Dinoland compared to the concept art on InsightsandSounds a while back. It was a landscape MP with Dinosaur (with indoor & outdoor track) an Ice Age area, and a bugs area. Think the size of Dinoland now, but with more in it.

Sigh. Dinoland. The land with the most potential became the worst conceived land in all of WDW.

This park is and will continue to be the true gem of WDW. I think this is the first palce to start in expansion. get rid of teh carny rides , and give us something to be proud of. I'd love to see the excavator realized where inside the mountain mammoth's unthaw and chase your car or something. A fleshed out Dinoland and Beastly Kingdom would bring this park to TDS standards.

I don't ever recall seeing anything inside this attraction. It's just throwing you around in the dark it seems to me.

Both Indy and Dinosaur need to lose the 'throw you around non-stop for the shear benefit of throwing you around' and make the motion more a supporting element.. not the show itself.

that was my point.. you barely get to see them due to the lighting and absurd amount of tossing.

Re: The Animal Kingdom "Dinosaurs" attraction that never was

I have to somewhat agree with Flynn regarding Dinosaur, and to a lesser extent Indiana Jones. In Dinosaur, there's no real environment. It's all a tease. I KNOW they can build a more convincing locale. I know why it's so dark in there... it's so they don't need to build it out! You're inside a building but no need to add a tree there if they're not gonna see it!

So that's my main issue with Dinosaur. I don't know where I'm going so I can't enjoy it. I do like the dinosaur AA but I can barely remember how many I even saw.
