    Other trip on the way...

Well I'll be in Orlando for business in June.. and it's been a while since the kids got a holiday so I decided to pull the trigger and book a vacation for the family at WDW.

I'm still undecided if to stay on property or not.. vs hotwiring a hotel offsite. Torn there.. I know the arguements but having a hard time pulling the trigger

Disney had some promos going, so the room-only rates are a bit cheaper, but with a family of 5 I'm still stuck with a family suite or 2 rooms which makes the call harder. Right now I have a value room booked at Sports for an avg of only $87 a night, which I'd be content with even tho I know it's not a great place. But having to pay for 2 rooms doubles it and makes the off-site comparison so much harder. I could book a 4star or higher on hotwire for $95/night.

But either way.. looks like the kids will get 5 days in the parks. Seriously considered doing Universal this trip... but at roughly $100/head to do it, and not being 'enough' alone to make Universal the focus of the trip.. I think we'll pass.

Uni/Seaworld have great looking offers if you plan to stay there the whole time.. but I don't think I'd want to spend more then 2 days there.

    Choices... Choices...

I guess the answer is just go more often then the choices are less stressfull

Re: Other trip on the way...

I guess I am lucky that my August vacation falls into the value season, because my two rooms at Pop Century with my AAA discount are only costing me a little more than $70 each, a night.

I crunched a lot of numbers before I made all my final travel decisions. Universal is indeed a costly proposition when you pair it with Disney, and it can be less espensive if you just go there.

I guess I am not telling you anything that you haven't already researched.

    Have a great June vacation.

I haven't called AAA or asked for that rate.. but I should I guess. That is what I booked last time. Right now the room reservation is $89 and $99 depending on the night

I believe that the $89 rate that you have been given is a discounted summer rate. I did see that on another website. Not sure that the AAA rate would be cheaper. I always ask for the AAA rate when I book through Disney. Actually this is a rare time that I am using a travel agent, and they were able to apply the AAA rate to my "room only" reservation.

The value season kicks in 8/9/2009 and the room rate drops to $82 for the value resorts booking through Disney. AAA always has prices lower by at least $10-$20 depending on the resort.

Re: Other trip on the way...

well I'm locked in now... at least to florida

Booked the flights today and the rental car. Right now I have a rezzie for 2 rooms at All Stars Sports to hold the crew. But we'll see how that holds up over time.

Amazing how even tho I'm only paying for 1 of my airfares (of a possible 5), staying in the lowest place on property, getting discounted tickets.. I'll still be spending

    1050 room
    1300 tix
    190 car
    233 airfare

= 2730 or almost 3k just to 'be there' and doesn't include any food or discretionary spending. In other threads people jeered when a guy says he spent 7-12k on a trip. Heck, if I were staying at a deluxe I can see that within spitting distance if I actually had to pay for airfare :o

Yes, but think of all the fun you will have. I remember our June trip to Disney World. We didn't realize it was Star Wars Weekend, and when my grandson discovered that, he had a blast with the Star Wars characters at MGM Studios.

Actually for 5 people at WDW, I think you did pretty well.

Nothing really to add Flynnibus other than "Have a wonderful time!"

It's getting really humid down here lately so make sure you have LOTS of bottled water.

Yeah, its been a while since we've been in the summer months. Worried about crowds too, but hey.. what can you do. It was a spur of the moment decision to get away. The wife always complains we don't vacation with just OUR family so she made me do it

Re: Other trip on the way...

I have visited in the Summer months, and I actually enjoy it a lot. The park hours are longer, and there is usually a full schedule of fireworks, and parades. ALthough, I have noticed that Fantasmic, and SpectroMagic are two that don't necessarily run each day. Of course, that just means you have to pay better attention to the schedules, if those are things that you want to do.

I wish that I could get my husband to visit WDW again. He went once in 1997, and his comments now are: "Too hot, and I hate planes". So I visit without him.

Family vacations are great. I wish that I could have afforded to take my own 2 boys when they were growing up. Now instead, I enjoy Disney World with my grandson.

I will do my best to be there in less than a month, unless the shuttle launch is delayed prior to my departure.
Not sure if we are driving or flying but we will stay off site as usual. We'll only have one day at WDW so EPCOT it will be.
