Because the drops in DL are out of necessity of the location of the ride and show building. a necessity the WDW plot did not have.

You obviously can't tell by looking at a photo, but I love how at WDW when you approach the entrance, you can immediately feel the cold air and it just looks so dark under that archway.

Paris is the most evocative of pirates just by looking at it and DL is the most elegant, although nothing about it really tells people they'll be pirates in the ride.

My vote went to WDW. It is well themed, evocative, fits with the surroundings, and maintains the disney look.

Paris is highly evocative, but looks a little too weathered. There is a certain look that Disney parks have and this pushes it a little too far. It reminds me of how walt changed the original concept of the haunted mansion facade from a decrepit looking one to what we currently have, deeming the original not disneyland enough. In the Paris DL version of POTC, I feel like the decrepit look won out. Having said this, I have never seen this entrance within the context of the park so it may work for that particular park.

Disneyland - I get the concept of moving from New Orleans through the bayous into the Caribbean, but somehow entering the ride through a house then seeing the flume system is somewhat discordant to me.

    DL's beauty is skin deep.

Sure it's nice and fits NOS - but I don't think it's great as the building for POTC. Then of course once you step inside it doesn't hold a candle to the other buildings.

WDW has a whole courtyard basically and fits the spanish main theme of POTC - and then of course has a great inside you wide through until you get to load.

I haven't seen a photo tour of Paris' location.

I think DL entrance is beautiful to look at and it fits perfectly with the theme of New Orleans Square- it has an elegance about it - but I'm partial to WDW. We've had several threads in the past about the theming of the lines and waiting areas for different rides - one of my favorite things at Magic Kingdom is the entrance to Pirates. Someone said earlier that the minute you step through the courtyard, you can feel the cold from the caverns below. That is correct. Halfway through the courtyard you are already transported to another world.

Also - someone asked earlier why there aren't any waterfalls in the WDW ride - there is a waterfall - it's at the end of the "cave" section before you get to the battle between the fort and the pirate ship -

Now that I think of it, I like the WDW feeling you get. The cold, ominous air, and there's a certain point in the queue where you completely forget about the outside world, and the only place you are is in the Spanish Main. Also, the dark winding queue helps you lose yourself. I'm just not sure I like the exterior of WDW's the best. Disneyland's elegance seems to match the greatness of the ride inside.

On that note I was in WDW POTC during EMH and the place was almost completely empty. I usually go to the left but decided to check out the right side since there was no line and people were actually lost in there. Usually there are some guide ropes to keep people on the right track but we were ending up at a dead end door etc. When I finally did get to the loading area I told the CM that there were people lost in the queue on the right side. His response "Not again."

I picked DLP but after looking at it again I agree with flotsam_mike the outside is too weathered. It's cool that there is the entire area for it but they should have went with a more kept up look.

They were referring to the less drops in the WDW version. The DL version is longer, and has more drops. This is because the DL version has go down and under the railroad and transport you out to the show building which is quite a distance from the entrance.

The DL version has a very long (and boring IMO) caverns portion at the start that the WDW version doesn't... as well as two (?) additional scenes after the town sets.

I'm sorry- I know the guests were probably not amused but that's funny. (thanks for the chuckle) I've been down both sides at all hours of operation (including EMH) and I can't say that I've ever seen it without guide ropes - I suppose it's possible - when you've been on it as many times as I have - you probably wouldn't notice anyway.

Here is a shot of the PoTC entrance before the refurb. Note the pirate bird between the arches. I've got a couple current shots from February but i'm having trouble getting them on here.

Did they bring the bird back outside? Or is this an old photo?

Re: Best Pirates of the Caribbean exterior (WDW, Disneyland/Tokyo, or Paris)

I'm surprised so many are voting for the Disneyland one. Were it an entrance to any other attraction it probably would be fine, but for an attraction as epic as Pirates, it just doesn't seem right to go under a foot bridge and into a building where you immediately see the flume and the outside. It just doesn't work for me.

Conversely, I love the feel at WDW's. You have the covered queue that lets wind sweep through, yet still has a permanent look. You enter the inside and soon are swept through a slightly decrepit-looking tunnels with better showmanship the further you go in. There's more to look at, and by the time you are at the flume it just "feels" right. The WDW queue sets you up for what's to come far better than the DL one.

Though the DL has the very excellent Bayou, when you combine all factors the exterior and then the "interior of the exterior" at WDW really get me in the mood for Pirates as it is all about subtle transitions which flow smoothly into each other.
