Lightbulb Ultimate urbex report - Exploring Discovery Island

This seems to have made a big "splash" on other Disney websites and mentions in the mainstream media, but I'm not seeing any mention here so I will post this.

A few months ago, a blogger posted his trip report out to Disney World's now defunct Discovery Island. For those who don't know, Discovery Island is an island located in Bay Lake, near the Fort Wilderness campground and the former River Country water park. Discovery Island was an accredited zoological facility, and was a precursor of sorts to what is now Animal Kingdom (Animal Kingdom even pays homage to Discovery Island with a section of the park of the same name).

Here's the trip report -- Enjoy!

My dad was just telling me about this the other day. It's so crazy to think about all of the abandoned areas of WDW; so much wasted space. But I guess they've got the room to waste?

Fascinating and highly creepy at the same time.

Heard someone talking about this when I was on the ferry from the Magic Kingdom. Really cool stuff, wish there were more pics.

Well, along similar lines, here's a report of someone trying to find the old boardwalk at Fort Wilderness. I would imagine that what she encountered would be similar to what one can expect on Discovery Island.

I actually was directed to the same trail by a CM. I was looking for a running trail, and she pointed me in this direction. The further I went back, the narrower the path went, until it petered off and I couldn't tell anymore. All around me was a thicket that would even frighten a machete.
