New "California" themed resort opens in 2012

It looks like DVC will be opening a new themed resort based on California...
DISNEY VACATION CLUB CALIFORNIA COAST HOTEL – ORLANDO, FLORIDA

Disney Vacation Club decided to extend its hotel experience with their new California Coast Resort at H1, Lake Buena Vista, Orlando, Florida. George **** was invited by the DVC Design Team to work under the direct supervision of GSB Architects, and Mr. Wing Chao, providing design direction for this next and possibly best of the DVC properties in Orlando. California’s remarkable coast offers an experience of recognizable icons which were chosen to be represented in separate hotel experiences including; Venice Beach, Casa del Mar, Montage, the Balboa Pavilion, Laguna Hills, Newport Beach, and Santa Barbara. The project is presently in the Schematic Design Phase.

    COMPLETION DATE: Estimated 2012

    SIZE: Estimated 1,208 units

    PROJECT COST: To Be Determined
The resort is planned to be located between Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.

All I have to say is well, the DCA scraps of 2001 HAD to go somewhere.. I believe there will be quite a few of DCA's relics (California letters, the tile murals (which have been removed meticulously), and the golden gate bridge) are all possibilities.

    What do you guys think?

i guess having a DCA hotel makes no sense seeing how the hole park had to be redone to make it a real park to stand up against Universal or Six Flags.

Is this supposed to make people want to go to DL? I kind of get that feeling from it. Why do we need a California-themed hotel in a resort thats in Florida? I guess the idea just doesn't make sense to me overall, but the resort itself sounds nice.

I'm glad to see that some of the most beautiful features of DCA won't be headed to the scrap heap, but guests chose WDW over DL, so why serve up CA? I'd also like to see more put into the parks themselves before expanding resort options. I think improving the parks would also prove a greater return on investment to DVC members in the long run.

To me it makes NO SENSE. Why would they take parts of a failing theme park, and try to make a resort out of it, at another theme park????

Hmm. I don't know about the whole recycling thing... They better be tied in well. If WDW does one thing right it's the theming of their (mainly deluxe) resorts. They are all very fun of course, but also very detailed and elegant at the same time. Stylized icons seem more all-star resorts than moderate or deluxe to me.

I love the resorts at WDW, but I really wish they would spend a bit more money to improve Epcot, DHS, and AK first before adding even more DVC style resorts.

I like the idea. But WHY does EVERYTHING have to be the darn DVC?

Thing to me is the stuff that might/could be recycled from DCA (letters, etc) seem more fit for theming a Moderate or even a Value level resort than a Deluxe Villa.

And seriously? California Coast? Or lordy me! I hope they come up with a better name than that.

Even better - kill two bird with one stone and use this for building the DVC they're planning in the former River Country spot. Spares me less DVC than we possibly need.

I'd bet anything that they're going to recycle to props from DCA and reuse them here at this resort.

Call me crazy, but I see NOTHING in there about bringing pieces from DCA over to the new resort. Maybe the bridge, but nothing else would really work out of context. I think the word "icon" in the press release is not what you think. I see the resort being more Spanish mission than anything else. That would certainly be the Santa Barbara/Balboa Pavillion part.

It's just MY OWN speculation. But why wouldn't they. The stuff is practically free for them to take.

No it isn't. They would have to buy it from that business unit.
