Re: 12 Days in Orlando: Walt Disney World, Universal, and the Kennedy Space Center

Park hopping time. Our chariot arrives:

I feel poorer just looking at Walt Disney World's Flagship resort:

The Epcot Food & Wine Festival was in soft-opening mode, and the decorations were all in place:

Not a lot of people partaking on this preview day:

We skipped the Food & Wine offerings (mostly) for now, and had lunch at the San Angel Inn. We were going to try La Hacienda de San Angel , but they were closed at the time, and we were too hungry to wait.

I hadn't heard great things about this restaurant, so I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious sirloin steak. I had a Margarita too, because doing so is obligatory when eating Mexican food. We were lucky to get a waterside table with a view of the temple. This eatery is definately the West Coast version of the Blue Bayou, when it comes to ambience:

    We're celebrating!

    The Tron-o-rail:

We returned to the Magic Kingdom for our aforementioned Jungle Cruise:

    A quintessential Magic Kingdom photo-op:

    Sparse crowds today:

Another attraction we did several times this trip was the Haunted Mansion. With upgraded sounds and added show scenes, the Magic Kingdom version beats Disneyland's. It was also nice to be able to ride the original attraction in October. I like Haunted Mansion Holiday, but all of my recent trips to Disneyland have co-incided with its' presence, so I enjoy seeing the "standard" version:

Re: 12 Days in Orlando: Walt Disney World, Universal, and the Kennedy Space Center

These are pretty cool Photopass photo-ops. I think they might be part of Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, but they were available to guests pre-party, during that overlap period where party guests are allowed into the park:

I regret not getting a photo with Davy Crockett Donald last time, so I took the chance to rectify that mistake:

Re: 12 Days in Orlando: Walt Disney World, Universal, and the Kennedy Space Center

After a rest at our hotel, we returned to the Magic Kingdom bus loop, en route to the Polynesian Resort for dinner.

Mickey's Not-So-Scary but More-Money-Than-I-Was-Willing-To-Spend Halloween party was underway. One of these times I'll check it out:

    Dinner tonight was at Ohana:

They start you out with "Welcome Bread":

They bring you a lot of the appetizers, no doubt a ploy to get you to fill up on the less costly items. The ploy tends to work, as the appetizers were excellent:

For the main course, waiters bring around skewers of Chicken, Pork, Steak, and Shrimp. They were all really tasty:

Dessert was a sublime Bread Pudding with Banana's Foster:

This was a delicious meal from start to finish, including a ridiculously touristy alcoholic beverage from the bar, served in a pineapple. Highly recommended.

One last picture from the Polynesian ends another day of this trip report:

Re: 12 Days in Orlando: Walt Disney World, Universal, and the Kennedy Space Center

    Day 11: October 01

The penultimate day of our trip, and our final full day in Orlando.

Our trip time was dictated by Vince's school schedule (he's in cooking school), but luckily our chosen dates coincided with Epcot's Food & Wine Festival. Soft openings began the day prior, and today was the official opening.

We saved all our dining plan snack credits for the festival. Why eat popcorn and churros, when one can enjoy cuisine from around the world instead?

Our first order of business was actually to register for the Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure:

After that, we did what must be the longest attraction in all of Walt Disney World, Universe of Energy:

I get all artsy and take a self-portrait in the mirrored awning:

It's a good attraction, even if the presence of Bill Nye the Science Guy dates it quite a bit. The dinosaurs terrified at least one child.

Next up is a visit to the Food & Wine Festival Center. It's nice that they have the space for this, but it would be much nicer if the pavillion still housed actual attractions:

They gave away handy passports to track your progress as you Sip 'n' Nibble (copyright, Rixter) your away around the world:

Collecting stamps is an option as well, and might be a fun way to include kids in the adventure:

Re: 12 Days in Orlando: Walt Disney World, Universal, and the Kennedy Space Center

It wouldn't be a Disney event without souvenir pins:

Do they still call these "toothpick holders" on receipts?

More of the merchandise. There was a good selection:

Snack credits don't cover drinks, so Vince loaded up one of the handy gift cards that can be worn on the wrist:

Re: 12 Days in Orlando: Walt Disney World, Universal, and the Kennedy Space Center

We did the Kim Possible thing as we went. It's a neat little attraction, and they put a lot of effort into the animated effects (your Kimunicator activates animated scenes in and around the various World Showcase pavillions). I imagine kids love it. I think we did two or three rounds before growing tired of it.

Vince gets a briefing in Mexico:

    Kielbasa and Pierogie from Poland:

    Vikings!

We stopped for some more substantial food from the China quick service location. It was quite good:

    Inside the China pavillion:

Re: 12 Days in Orlando: Walt Disney World, Universal, and the Kennedy Space Center

For this 15th anniversary of the Food & Wine Festival, all the booths noted what year they debuted. South Korea was one of several new additions this year:

    Germany:

    Performer in Italy:

    Drummers in Japan:

We checked out the current display in the Japan pavillion:

These performers in the lobby of the American Adventure were phenomenal:

Vince enjoys his first visit to Walt Disney World:

    The Australia booth and menu:

    A pause to appreciate nature:

A camel wearing a Fez hat, in Morocco:

Some nice architecture in the Morocco area:

There were a lot of performers out and about this day:

    Belgium was another 2010 addition:

I've had belgian waffles plenty of times, but these ones were fresh and delicious, and absolutely worth it:

Re: 12 Days in Orlando: Walt Disney World, Universal, and the Kennedy Space Center

Time to cure homesickness with a visit to the Canada pavillion, including the circle-vision movie starring Canada's sweetheart, Martin Short:

Not a bad film. Most of the World Showcase movied could use an update to be honest.

    Lots of nice scenery here:

I've been to the real Butchard Gardens in Victoria. It's only a slight exaggeration to say that a flight to Orlando for this miniature version takes less time and money, than the ferry to Vancouver Island:

I live in Canada, and yet the only place I've ever had cheddar cheese soup is at Epcot:

I'm pretty sure the salmon portions were significantly less anemic in past years:
