    Question CoP Question...

Ok was on the Carousel of Progress today and my friend had an interesting question, and intead of simply looking it up I thought of asking you fine folks.

In the 2nd Scene he is holding a fan banner thing for Niagara Falls. Is there a reason for this? Why is it Niagara Falls and not something else, like July 4th related since that is the day it happens to be in that scene?

    Re: CoP Question...

As I understand it, Niagra Falls was simply a popular vacation destination back in that time.

    Re: CoP Question...

SBK is correct in that statement. The time frame of that scene definitely had Niagra as a top vacation spot. I would believe that the Grand Canyon would be up on that list too but Disney picked the right memorabilia in that one. And when I say Disney I do mean Walt as CoP was one of the original attractions he designed himself. It was debuted in the 1965 Worlds Fair.

Niagara Falls was also a key location in the development of the electricity industry, and GE (CoP's original sponsor) was heavily involved with harnessing hydroelectricity from the falls.

If the fan had appeared in the first scene, it might have been a souvenir from the 1901 Pan-American Exposition.

Looks like the Worlds Fair didn't have the fan:

I believe the seasonal aspect of the show was a new element that was added when the show moved to Florida. That's probably why there was no fan in the World's Fair version. It wasn't explicitly summer in that version.

It bothers me when people selectively edit quotes to support whatever point they are trying to prove.

That's what I figured - that it was added with the 1 holiday per scene theme of the revamped version for WDW.

I agree that Niagara Falls was a popular tourist destination back in the 60s. My parents even went there for their honeymoon.

Fun Fact: The original (not sure if it's the one they still use) voice of Cousin Orville is Mel Blanc.

Except for the last scene, the scenes weren't tied to holidays until the Great Big Beautiful 90s update. They also ditched the whole feminism angle from the 70s-80s version.

It still is Mel Blanc, but he's gone from being Cousin Orville to Uncle Orville.

Good grief, the things I learn here! Really??? So, the dialogue is all different from the orginial, then? It must be (remembering the reference to it being too hot to iron inside). I've been thinking for years that the current dialogue is the original... Can you tell me more about the "feminism angle" of the 70s-80s? Or anything more about the orginial version? Wondering how much of the current dialogue is original and how much is not. How about the part where father and son are checking out the hot babe in that gizmo-thing? Is that original? That part always strikes me as a little... off, somehow, like if it were today, would Dad be showing junior how to log onto internet porn?
