    Western River Expedition Animations

The Western River Expedition was an attraction planned for the Magic Kingdom. It would have been a lavish tour of the Old West in the manner of Pirates of the Caribbean. However, the company learned that what people really wanted was more buccaneers, so it was scrapped in favor of another PotC ride.

The talented David Witt has made a short series of animations based on the original Marc Davis concept art for the WRE. You can view them at Vimeo here: Western River Expedition: Last Roundup on Vimeo

Wow, that is fantastic. Sort of what I imagined when I heard they were going to do a video simulation at D23 this summer.

    Re: Western River Expedition Animations

Thanks for the nice comments folks.

I'm the guy who's "guilty" of making these things, and I posted them on my blog back in August with a little bit of commentary about each one...

Animated Concept Art from Western River Expedition: Saloon Singer

Animated Concept Art from Western River Expedition: Horse on the Roof

Animated Concept Art from Western River Expedition: The Last Roundup

If you're interested you can check them out there, and please leave a comment if you wish.

I always thought the "The Last Roundup" needed a little bit of a setup since it was like a mini virtual ride thru. Also the art I used for the WRE animations was mostly found online, and the highly compressed quality of the JPEGs made them difficult to work with.

I'm not certain that WRE would be appreciated in today's overly PC environment. There were a number of racial gags in that ride that would have probably been removed by now such as the drunk indian.

They could have replaced him with the Nearsighted Indian!

I think that a lot as well... I've always thought that our complaints over the Pirates 2006 renovation or the Small World 2008 renovation would be nothing compared to what we would have seen done to the Western River Expedition.

    Re: Western River Expedition Animations

There's also the fact that Western movies just don't have the draw they did 50 years ago. Even by the time the Magic Kingdom was built, their popularity was seriously on the wane.
