that's what I was thinking... Corporations follow through on really bad ideas all the time, because no one wants to admit they were wrong...

This. I could see them spending billions to develop Avatarland, to have it flop terribly... because Avatar was a movie that innovated some super cool effects, but the actual characters/plot/originality(lack of) just flat-out stunk. It won't stand the test of time, like Star Wars or Harry Potter did.

Disney already has a land to compete with Harry Potter. Only it's on the west coast. IMO Carsland is Disney's answer to Harry Potter. Don't think for a second that Universal is adding Harry Potter to Hollywood just for the heck of it.

Can't say I'm suprised. If it is WDI (TDO more specifically) who killed the deal, then I would say its because they are too cheap (once again) to actually put substantial funds into a new project. But really Avatarland was a flawed concept from the beginning. If you're going to buy the rights to a franchise, then it better not be in the same genre as something you already own the rights to. Avatar is eerily similar to the worlds of star wars which are already seen in depth at Star Tours. Buying marvel made sense because, with the exception of the incredibles, Disney did not have another franchise in the same genre/ style of the marvel characters. Buying the rights to avatar did not make sense IMO. Just like it would make no sense for Disney to buy the rights to nanny mcphee (random example) since it is so close in concept and genre to Mary Poppins. Hopefully this does not mean WDI is giving up the idea of expanding AK or DHS since both parks are in desperate need of an expansion.

Good Riddance to a Bad Idea.

Now they'll have money to develop "Discs of Tron" ( sorry, what the kids these days call "Disc Wars" ) for me.

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. Unless Universal gets the deal. That would be considerably less awesome.

"Avatarland" is the sort of project Disney would have wished on its competition -- back in the days before Disney started thinking like its competition.

I still believe that Avatar land is a viable idea.

That being said I would like a lot of other things in Animal Kingdom.

What I really want is another project at Animal Kingdom that alters the skyline like Everest.

If true, this is great news. Bring on Beastly Kingdom - it's only been 14 years.

Yes, but if it's familiar, it's not unique or special.

And that's precisely where Disney has lost its way. Not to mention its courage, vision, and creativity.

Well, they are kind of doing both with Carsland, no? They created the film, but the attraction at DCA will be familiar because of the film which they created

I think USH is adding it because they know it's a money factory - not because they want to counter carsland. They know they aren't going to top Disney, they just want to be sure people come see them. So they only need to compete for attention, not try to make people see them instead of Disney.

EXACTLY! As sad as that may be, it's the truth these days. Why else would Disney have gone through the trouble of buying 'Avatar', of all things? It was a knee-jerk reaction to Harry Potter, and since Disney doesn't own any franchises of that scale, they went and bought the biggest they could get. Remember when Disney was the company starting the competition, not trying to keep up with it?
