New Costumes for the American Adventure CMs

According to a letter appearing around the Internet, a CM from the American Adventure is reporting they are ditching the colonial style for "more modern suits and dresses."

Seems like a very bad idea, as the costumes seem so appropriate to the colonial style mansion the American Adventure takes place in.

I read the rumor personally I think it's a very irrational and to an extent in patriotic the whole building is colonial mansion and so the costumes are a perfect fit. If they say upkeep that's a lie any costume was made for easy upkeep and freshening. I wonder if they will take the Soarin' costumes.

If this is true, it's an inane idea, and will directly impact the guests' enjoyment, IMHO. If you're reading this, Disney execs, then DON'T DO IT!

As long as it remains a rumor I will have no issue. Hopefully if it unfortunately becomes true the Voices of Liberty will retain their costumes, I don't mind the modern suits they were once in a while but forbid a permanent change!

I don't see why the American Pavillion has to be set in colonial times even if the show is relevant to American history... much more of that history is displayed than just colonial times. Whenever I walk into American Adventure I just always have felt it as an extension of Liberty Square and I think there ought to be a difference. Every pavilion talks about its country's heritage and tradition, but do they don outfits from their independence period? :P

I agree with the above. I would be more appalled if they did that to Liberty Square, but American Adventure? not really. Colonial Attire isn't exactly the most traditional style of clothing.

As I remember it, except for the Japan pavillion, all of the cast members' costumes are from 100-200 years ago, or so.

If you guys consider the American pavilion an extension of Liberty Square then the costumes should be similar. Although if the costumes range from say 1700's to say just before the turn to the 20th century.

They can't be modern, heck if they want modern they should let the castmembers wear street clothes. In my opinion nothing is more diverse than one nations traditional clothing even if it is worn for special events. In EPCOTS worlds fair theme that should be special enough.

Seems like an odd decision to me, especially since the attraction is all about history (even if the whole pavilion isn't).

+1 Personally I enjoy looking at the traditional garb of each country...it's a very nice touch to the experience

If we really want traditional garb then Cast Members should be wearing Native American outfits.

What about garb that fits with the era of the building?

This isn't so much about contemporary vs. traditional as it is tasteful vs. garish. The old/current costumes are meticulously detailed and, because they are not common dress today, very charming and part of the overall pavilion theming that is transportive and contributes to a sense of place. The new costumes look like flight attendant outfits. Not to mention, it's difficult to imagine that these costumes will look flattering on many of the CMs forced to wear them.

Most of all, though, I fear for Lonnie - TWDC, TDO in particular, is not kind to employees that break rank and file. For him to publicly put himself out there with an editorial in Orlando Attractions is brave and risky and I hope he's not punished for it. He's been at The American Adventure since EPCOT Center's opening and is one of those few Cast Members who have become almost synonymous with the attraction they work at. I'd hate to see him face repercussions for speaking out.
I knew if this business was ever to get anywhere, if this business was ever to grow, it could never do it by having to answer to someone unsympathetic to its possibilities, by having to answer to someone with only one thought or interest, namely profits. For my idea of how to make profits has differed greatly from those who generally control businesses such as ours. I have blind faith in the policy that quality, tempered with good judgment and showmanship, will win against all odds.
