I saw some of the pics before they were taken away. Let's just say Disney needs to get busy.

I'm pretty sure that was managements opinion when maintenance asked to fix up the attraction.

    Re: Moldy Malestrom

It's funny, because though I rode maelstrom at the end of october for the first time and it must have been close to the same condition, I never noticed any of the problems with the ride, the animatronics, or even really that it was dirty. And it's clearly disgusting, I saw the pictures before they went down.

It's funny what a difference being a visitor for the first time and being a returner makes, you have a better, critical eye for everything the more you see it. Or perhaps I was just used to seeing rides in that condition, as I've gone to WDW only 4 times in my 22 years and never noticed the deteriorating state of the park which has been stated time and time again.

In a way it's understandable that there is more slack towards maintenance and cleanliness of the parks and the rides towards some of the guests like me- who rarely visit and might not know or remember what it looks like at its best. Not saying that that's an excuse for this. Nothing is.

Mold... in a Disney ride... this is about as sad as Horizons post-94, at least that had the excuse of being on life support. Is it seriously too much to ask to have a janitor at least vacuum off the dust? Have they at least fixed the Tesla coil that made lightning over the oil rig or is it still just a strobe light?

Horizons they had the excuse that it was planned to be scrapped. This there is no plan (as far as I know) to scrap this attraction, or make changes to it.

If you've got time to spare could you swing by Space Mountain? Last time I went the queue was in pretty horrible contrition (or at least the re purposed chicken exit portion was), I remember seeing chipped paint and dust along with bulbs that weren't even blue.

I am trying to decide how I should spend my time. I spend so much time at Universal/SeaWorld that I often don't have time for Disney (unless I am going with friends at which point I don't bring all my camera gear)

But Disney really needs a critical eye right now... so I am torn.

I think it says worlds about how Disney is operating these days, skating by on reputation and riding past achievements. This was covered pretty well in Kevin's latest post and I for one and very much dismayed at the level of care that Disney has chosen to give to its attractions. I wish I could say this was limited to attractions in Orlando, but on my last visit to Anaheim I have to say I noticed things here and there that were similar (to be fair, nothing on this level of neglect).

It is very telling that we have Universal outdoing Disney on its presentation of Show. Universal is hungry while Disney is content to rest on its laurels. Disney better watch its backside.

Wow. That is really bad condition. I thought the ride was looking bad when I was there in 2008, but it appears they are letting things fall apart. I can't believe they lest the rock work open to expose the metal. That totally ruins the immersion effect. The mold is also really gross and concerning. That could mean really bad air quality, mold in the walls. Yuck! Time for Maelstrom 2.0! Shut it down and reboot.
